USA Water Polo’s USA Blue Defeats USA Red In Exhibition at Oaks Christian School

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, California, May 31. THE Men's Senior National Team defeated the USA World University Games Team 11-5 in an exhibition match held earlier tonight at Oaks Christian School. The two squads are preparing for a summer full of action that will see the Men's Senior National Team take part in the FINA World League Super Final and FINA World Championships, while the college age crowd will compete in the World University Games.

The Senior Team labeled USA Blue started off the game strongly as Ryan Bailey, Layne Beaubien and Peter Varellas all scored. Shea Buckner found the net for the World University Games team, dubbed USA Red, and it was Blue leading Red 3-1 after the first.

In the second quarter it was all about Jeff Powers as the two-time Olympian scored consecutive tallies to put USA Blue up 5-1 at intermission. The third quarter was largely scoreless until 2:37 remaining when John Mann found the net. Bailey followed with another score and USA Blue was up 7-1. Michael Sample closed out the period with a goal for USA Red and they now trailed 7-2.

Scoring picked up again in the fourth with Jeff Tyrell scoring two of the quarters first three goals. The other came from Buckner but USA Red still trailed 9-3. Adam Wright then found the net for USA Blue, but this was followed by a Tommy Corcoran score. Buckner followed Corcoran's score with his third goal of the game to draw within 10-5. Thomas Hopkins delivered the final blow for USA Blue scoring with just a second remaining in the contest to leave USA blue with an 11-5 victory.

The two teams meet up again tomorrow at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA. The match is set to begin at 6pm PST.
