USA Water Polo Men’s Senior National Team To Open Three Game Series With Serbia Thursday

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California, June 3. THE USA Water Polo Men's Senior National Team opens a three game series with the Serbian National Team starting Thursday June 4 at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. The series will also see stops at the University of California-Berkeley on June 6 and Stanford University on June 7.

Team USA Head Coach Terry Schroeder leads the team into action after two consecutive weekends of exhibition scrimmages. The Senior National Team took part in the Fisher Cup on Memorial Day weekend defeating Canada and then last weekend battled the World University Games Team in matches in Westlake Village, CA and Newport Beach, CA.

The Red, White, and Blue enter the weekend series ranked second in the world after a Silver Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, while Serbia enters ranked third after a Bronze Medal in Beijing. The two teams are no strangers to each other having met on four occasions in 2008 with Serbia winning three of the matches, but the United States winning the last.

Serbia was victorious in a meeting during common training in February of 2008 and in the Gold Medal Match of the 2008 FINA World League Super Final. The two met again in the preliminary rounds of the 2008 Olympic Games with Serbia winning a closely contested match 4-2. This was Team USA's only loss in group play. The United States would redeem themselves in the semi-final match as they downed the Serbian team 10-5 to advance to the Gold Medal match while earning their first medal since 1988.

These matches will be the final games on US soil for Team USA before they begin their international competition season. They take part in the 2009 FINA World League Super Final in Montenegro June 16-21 and then ready for the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy July 19-August 2.

Tickets for the three-game Serbia series are going fast but are still available by visiting usawaterpolo.org.
