USA Water Polo Announces Women’s National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – USA Water Polo and Women’s National Team Head Coach Guy Baker announced the 1998 Women’s National Team roster at the conclusion of a training camp held over the Memorial Day weekend in San Jose, Calif.

“This was our first camp and things went very well,” said Baker, who was named head coach in March. Over the weekend Baker, 35, was also named the USA Water Polo/United Airlines 1998 Coach of the Year. An assistant on the 1992 USA Men’s Olympic water polo team and again with the 1997-98 men’s team, Baker led UCLA to two men’s NCAA and three Women’s Collegiate titles in the last three years, a feat unmatched in water polo history.

“We conducted open tryouts in Long Beach, Calif., and in Annapolis, Md., last week,” Baker said. “However, this was the first time we have put all the top players together. We saw a good deal of progress between the first practice and the final inter-squad scrimmage. There was noticeable improvement between our scrimmages Saturday and Sunday.”
