USA Water Polo Advances to World League Quarterfinals

The USA Women’s Senior National Team continues to roll along at the FINA World League Super Final finishing group play undefeated with an 8-3 win over the Netherlands.

Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, CA/UCLA/SOCAL) and Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/Diablo) scored two goals each in the win while Ashleigh Johnson (Miami, FL/Princeton/Miami Riptides) recorded 11 saves in net.

This was the third straight win over the Dutch in the last 10 days as the two met twice last week in Kunshan. Team USA now advances to the quarterfinal round where they will meet Russia on Friday at 5:40pm local time/2:40am pt.

The USA water polo team opened up a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and then held the Netherlands scoreless in the second period as they built a 3-1 halftime lead. In the third quarter it was more of the same with Team USA outscoring the Dutch 2-1 to hold a 5-2 advantage.

The red, white and blue put things away in the fourth period with three more goals while the defense allowed just one en route to an 8-3 final.

Team USA went 1/5 on power plays while the Netherlands were 3/9 with neither team attempting a penalty shot.
