USA Swimming Winter Nationals: Missy Franklin Shows Closing Speed Again, This Time Wins 100 Back

ATLANTA, Georgia, December 2. AFTER coming up just short of chasing down Camille Muffat in the 200 free earlier in the evening, Colorado Star Missy Franklin surfaced from a stocked championship finale in the 100 back to win at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals.

Franklin used another final 15-meter surge to carry the victory with a 1:00.10. Her fastest time this year is a fifth-ranked 59.18 from Summer Nationals. Olivia Smoliga posted a second place time of 1:00.53 to move to 23rd in the world rankings in a bit of an upset of some more highly-ranked swimmers. Elizabeth Pelton snared third in 1:00.55, while Noriko Inada took fourth in 1:00.74.

Sinead Russell (1:00.82), Kathleen Hersey (1:01.70), Julia Wilkinson (1:01.82), Maggie Meyer (1:02.15), Fabiola Molina (1:02.54) and Laure Manaudou (1:03.14) also vied for the title.

Hilary Caldwell touched first in the B final with a 1:02.11, while Madison White finished second in 1:02.12. Jillian Vitarius (1:02.72), Therese Svendsen (1:02.85), Yulduz Kuchkarova (1:03.00), Kylie Stewart (1:03.09), Eszter Povazsay (1:03.12), Ally Howe (1:03.25), Heidi Hatteberg (1:03.36) and Ann Fittin (1:03.88) placed third through 10th in the consolation heat.

Lauren Lavigna snared the C final win in 1:02.41, while Kendyl Stewart placed second in 1:02.86. Hannah Ross (1:03.36), Isabella Arcilla (1:03.50), Anika Apostalon (1:03.68), Madison Hahn (1:03.78), Chatham Penrod (1:03.79), Sidney Cooke (1:03.80), Kate Fesenko (1:03.82) and Breann Fuller (1:04.10) also swam in the bonus heat.
