USA Swimming to Air Race For Gold ‘Magazine’ Show on NBC

Race For Gold

USA Swimming is producing a ‘magazine’ style show for NBC that extends the network’s coverage of swimming beyond race competitions and shares swimming in a new way with athletes, coaches, families and fans.

The one-hour “USA Swimming’s Race for Gold” will feature an inside look at the sport’s top athletes, teams, historical moments and grow-the-sport initiatives. The special will air Sunday, Aug. 9 at 1:30 pm Eastern on NBC Sports, as part of the broadcast package of the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships.

This unique format, highlighting many of USA Swimming’s personalities and programs, will lead into NBC’s coverage of the 16th FINA World Championships, which starts at 2:30 pm Eastern on Aug. 9. NBC’s Carolyn Manno hosts the Race for Gold.

Scheduled segments include:
• Interview with Michael Phelps & Allison Schmitt
Katie Ledecky feature
Missy Franklin feature
• Historic Women’s 100y Freestyle Race at NCAAs
• Make a Splash with Phillips 66 feature
• SwimToday and the #SwimVite promotion feature
• Highlights from FINA World Championships in Kazan
• SwimMAC feature
• Meet National Team Newcomers Josh Prenot & Kelsi Worrell
• Trials nerves feature

“Creating a magazine style format is another step in our evolution to grow our TV properties beyond events,” said Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming Executive Director. “’Race for Gold’ gives us a chance to tell the stories of some of the top personalities and newcomers in the sport, as well as feature some of the great programs in place to grow the sport. We expect that the swimming community, as well as sport fans, will enjoy and support this type of added programming.”

The show will be promoted and shared with the #RaceforGold hashtag to drive tune-in.

This show adds to the existing swimming broadcasts planned on NBC this year including the Phillips 66 National Championships, FINA World Championships, AT&T Winter National Championships and Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool. Universal Sports also annually broadcasts five stops on the Arena Pro Swim Series.
