USA Swimming Short Course Junior Nationals: Ryan Murphy Cleans House, Sets U.S. National Age Group Record

AUSTIN, Texas, December 8. BOLLES' Ryan Murphy certainly was the headliner on the first night of swimming at the USA Swimming Short Course Junior Nationals held in Austin.

Murphy crushed the boys 200 IM with a 1:45.77 to clear David Nolan's 2009 meet record of 1:46.26. Murphy, 16, bettered a U.S. National Age Group record in the 15-16 division previously held by Michael Phelps with a 1:46.30 since 2002. Jacob Pebley placed second tonight in 1:46.62, while Bolles' Teo D'Alessandro earned third in 1:47.20.

Bolles' Ryan Murphy, Joseph Schooling, Santo Condorelli and Caeleb Dressel led a trio of teams under the meet record in the boys 200 free relay with a 1:19.82. SwimMAC's Logan Heck, Peter Brumm, Ryan Wilkinson and Kyle Darmody took second in 1:21.58, while Bolles' B of Teo D'Alessandro, Christopher Sadsad, George Frank and Ian Apple wound up third in 1:21.77. All three beat Dynamo's 2010 meet record of 1:21.83.

Murphy grabbed his third title of the night by nearly clearing his NAG in the 100 back with a 47.81 to leadoff Bolles' Teo D'Alessandro, Joseph Schooling and Caeleb Dressel's boys 400 medley relay victory in 3:14.92. That swim smashed the meet record of 3:18.57 set by Bolles in 2010. SwimMAC's Kyle Darmody, Logan Heck, Peter Brumm and John Manchester placed second in 3:19.60. Nashville's Chatham Dobbs, James Goss, Paul Davis and Adam Cornett took third in 3:21.15.

Michigan Lakeshore's Courtney Bartholomew, Lissa Vandermeulen, Taylor Garcia and Holly Morren won the girls 400 medley relay in 3:41.67. That swim bettered the 3:42.08 set by Sun Devil Aquatics last year. Dynamo's Kylie Stewart, Jamie Christy, Nicole Stafford and Caitlin Cooper touched second in 3:43.38. Saint Andrew's Tasija Karosas, Lindsey McKnight, Megan Moroney and Brenna Ruth snared third in 3:43.52.

SwimMAC's Lauren Rhodes, Maija Roses, Caroline Bryant and Nora McCullagh captured the girls 200 free relay title in 1:33.24, while Dynamo's Kylie Stewart, Caitlin Cooper, Kaitlin Kitchens and Nicole Stafford earned second in 1:33.67. Lake Oswego's Sarah Kaunitz, Grace Carlson, Catherine Yee and Brenda Cha took third in 1:33.67.

Indiana-bound Haley Lips of Y-Spartaquatics captured the girls 500 free victory in 4:45.96. Raleigh's Henriette Stenkvist took second in 4:46.11, while Katy's Cameron McHugh raced to third in 4:46.41. Dynamo's Matias Koski claimed the boys 500 free title in 4:19.47, while Denver's Clark Smith earned second in 4:23.53. SwimMAC's Peter Brumm snared third in 4:25.34.

DU Hilltopper Kelly Naze just missed the meet record in the girls 200 IM with a 1:58.07 for the win. That swim missed the 1:58.03 set by Lindsey McKnight back in 2009. Hershey's Meaghan Raab touched second in 1:58.28, while McKnight wound up third overall in 1:59.66.

Dallas Mustang Claire Brandt won the girls 50 free in 22.89, while Saint Andrew's Lindsey McKnight took second in 22.92. Crimson's Rachel Moore picked up third in 22.99. Nitro's Matthew Ellis hit the wall in 20.10 to win the boys 50 free. Gillette's Nick Dillinger placed second in 20.19, while Alamo Area's John Murray posted a third-place 20.24.
