USA Swimming Sectionals, University Park: Patrick Schirk Crushes Meet Record in 100 Back

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania, July 19. PATRICK Schirk took a serious chunk out of the meet record in the men's 100 back in front of his hometown crowd at the USA Swimming Sectionals held on the campus of Penn State.

Schirk dropped a time of 55.61 to wipe out the 56.94 set by David Russell in 2006. Fellow Patrick, 16-year-old Murphy of Green Mountain finished second in 57.11, while Dan Fimbianti placed third in 57.93.

Penn State went 1-2 in the women's 200 fly to open the evening. Kelly Nelson won in 2:16.12, while Alexandra Young took second in 2:17.64. Courtney Otto, 15, of Star Swimming finished third in 2:19.21.

Mike Seiferth of Jewish Community claimed the men's 200 fly in 2:04.59, while Penn State's Josh Wakeley (2:05.17) and Jamie Francis (2:08.73) rounded out the top three.

Another Penn State victory occurred in the women's 100 back. Michelle Myers topped the finale in 1:03.40, while Meghan Leddy, 17, of Eastern Express touched second in 1:04.51. Alex Suppan, 17, of Green Mountain placed third in 1:05.97.

Lindsay Vrooman, 16, of Pine Richland touched out Joanna Thomas of GCIT Swimming, 4:22.35 to 4:22.68, in the women's 400 free. Thomas' teammate Hayley Edwards, 17, pocketed third in 4:25.40.

Trevor Scheid of Jewish Community copped the men's 400 free title in 4:03.98. Jon Cochrane of PSU placed second in 4:04.15, while Dan Rozick and Michael Thomas, 16, of North Baltimore tied for third with matching 4:07.87s.

The 800 freestyle relays closed the curtains on the night. North Baltimore's Jessie Krebs, Maggie Brown, Camryne Morris and Rachael Schaffer won the women's race in 8:40.04, while New Canaan's Costas Hadjipateras, Patrick White, Trevor Healy and Devon Healy claimed the men's title in 7:57.30.
