USA Swimming Sectionals, University Park: Assorted Teams Pick Up Titles

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania, July 18. A variety of clubs wound up with gold medals at the end of the night of the USA Swimming Sectional held on the campus of Penn State.

Kelly Nelson of Penn State won the women's 200 free in 2:04.25, while Megan Steeves (2:05.41) and Joanna Thomas of GCIT Swimming (2:06.45) rounded out the top three.

Jon Cochrane of Penn State then claimed the men's 200 free in 1:53.57. Kevin Wakefield of Long Island took second in 1:55.38, while Trevor Scheid of Jewish Community and Ben Ryan of Penn State tied for third with matching 1:56.13s.

Penn State went 1-2 in the women's 100 fly. Alexandra Young touched first in 1:02.09 with Lauren Smart finishing second in 1:03.02. Danielle Schulkin, 16, of Sea Devil wound up third in 1:04.33.

Ricky Henahan of Fairport snared the men's 100 fly in 57.13, while Patrick Murphy, 16, of Green Mountain (57.29) and Kevin Schuster of Town of Tonawanda (57.30) placed second and third, respectively.

In the women's 400 IM, Courtney Otto, 15, of Star Swimming finished first in 4:57.91, while Jessie Krebs, 16, of North Baltimore took second in 5:00.63. Annie Zhu, 13, of Laguardia finished third in 5:02.37.

Michael Thomas, 16, of North Baltimore clinched the men's 400 IM in 4:35.17. Dan O'Connor, 16, of Syracuse Chargers snared second in 4:36.94, while Josh Wakeley of Penn State finished third in 4:37.47.

The 400 free relays closed down the night. The Town of Tonawanda's Marissa Dressel, Sarah Sciarrino, Sam Palma and Natalie Lewis won the women's race in 4:02.75, while North Baltimore's Carter Gisriel, Greg Pelton, Richard Hills and Brian Scarlett snagged the men's title in 3:37.05.
