USA Swimming Sectionals, Iowa City: Ashley Wanland Blazes 100 Breast

IOWA CITY, Iowa, July 23. THE USA Swimming Sectionals held in Iowa City kept on rolling with some swift breaststroke times being posted in long course meter format.

Wisconsin's Ashley Wanland posted a 1:08.80 to win the women's 100 breast, nearly a top-25 world ranked effort. Aquajets' Abigail Duncan finished second in 1:11.18, while South West's Samantha Pochowski earned third in 1:12.30. Peoria Area's Matthew Elliott cruised to victory in the men's 100 breast with a 1:01.95. Fox Valley's Kevin Cordes (1:03.81) and NASA Wildcat Kevin Puskaric (1:04.20) rounded out the top three. Swimming World intern Tyler Remmel of Lake Country wound up fourth with a 1:04.98, just outside the Trials cut of 1:04.69.

Hannah Ross cruised to victory in the women's 200 back with a 2:14.85, while Westmont's Kelly Ryan finished second in 2:16.65. Wisconsin's Amie Osten earned third in 2:18.20. NASA Wildcat Varun Shivakumar knocked off Wisconsin's Andrew Teduits, 2:04.60 to 2:04.81, in the men's 200 back. Wisconsin's Jesse Stipek placed third in 2:05.64.

Wisconsin's Danielle Beckwith topped the women's 400 free in 4:21.16. Teammate Monika Stitski finished second in 4:22.73, while Elmbrook's Kelsey Hojan Clark took third in 4:22.91. NASA Wildcat John Frutiger captured the men's 400 free in 4:01.08, while YMCA Flying Fish Nicholas Killeen finished second in 4:01.32. NASA Wildcat Jan Hanulik placed third in 4:01.40.

Cats' Melanie Rowland snatched the women's 100 fly title in 1:02.42, while Wheaton's Connie Hsu earned second in 1:02.73. St. Charles' Sarah Sykstus placed third in 1:03.23. Wisconsin's Daniel Lester picked up the men's 100 fly crown in 53.79. NASA Wildcat's Stephen Yemm finished second in 55.50, while Wisconsin's Wes Lagerhausen wound up third in 56.11.
