USA Swimming Sectionals, Bakersfield: Terrapins Post Strong Day

BAKERSFIELD, California, July 18. THE Terrapins Swim Club wound up having a particularly strong night at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Bakersfield.

Kate Dwelley of Terrapins snared the women's 200 free with a time of 2:00.42. Samantha Shellem, 16, of La Mirada took second in 2:02.92, while Chelsea Chenault, 13, of Terrapins finished third in 2:03.46.

Tom Shields, 17, of Nova beat out Phillip Morrison of Stanford, 1:52.06 to 1:52.89, in the men's 200 free. Kyle Vivra of Penguin wound up third in 1:54.06.

Jennifer Gong of De Anza Cupertino snagged the women's 400 IM crown in 4:58.01. Katelyn Brix of Crow Canyon finished second in 5:00.74 with teammate Paige Bradley, 17, taking third in 5:01.63.

Sean Mahoney of Terrapins clinched the men's 400 IM in 4:29.30, while Chris Quemana of Swim Pasadena (4:34.23) and Colin Hanna of Terrapins (4:34.40) picked up second and third, respectively.

The 800 free relays wrapped up the evening. The Terrapins squad of Rachel O'Brien, Dwelley, Chenault and Presley Bard won the women's title in 8:27.11, while Nova's Shields, Yutaro Yamashita, Kevin Little and Julian Bonse pocketed the men's crown in 7:43.45.
