USA Swimming Names 2012-13 Open Water National Team, Junior National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, May 7. USA Swimming today announced the swimmers named to its 2012-2013 USA Swimming Open Water National Team and its 2012-2013 Open Water Junior National Team. A total of 12 open water swimmers, including six men and six women were named to the National Team, which include the 2012 10K National Champions Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del.) and Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.).

Notable members of the 2012-2013 Open Water National Team include 2012 Olympian Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.), 5K National Champion David Heron (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.), Arthur Frayler (Ambler, Pa.), and Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.).

Swimmers were selected for the USA Swimming Open Water National Team based upon their finish at the 2012 USA Swimming 10K Open Water National Championships that took place April 27 in Miromar Lakes, Fla. Since USA Swimming did not qualify a female Olympian at the 2011 FINA World Championships all of the top six finishers were named to the National Team. On the men's side, the 2012 Open Water Olympian was named to the National Team as were the top five non-Olympic finishers.

The 2012-2013 Open Water Junior National Team features a total of six swimmers, three men and three women. Swimmers, aged 18-and-under at the time of qualifying and who finished in the top three at the 2012 USA Swimming 10K Open Water National Championships, qualified for the Junior National Team. Junior Team members may not have previously been on a higher-ranked International National Team. All team members must have also finished within 15 minutes of the first place finisher.
