USA Swimming Junior Nationals: Plenty of Meet Records on Night One

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, August 10. THE first night of swimming took place at the USA Swimming Junior Long Course Nationals held in Federal Way, Wash.

North Baltimore's Felicia Lee raced to victory in the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:09.45. That performance cut two seconds off the meet record of 2:11.46 set by Adrienne Bicek last year. The Claremont Club's Noelle Tarazona placed second in 2:11.03, also under the former record, while Spartaquatics' Haley Lips finished third in 2:11.63.

Duneland's Kyle Whitaker crushed his meet record in the men's 200 fly with a 1:56.95. That effort chopped more than two seconds from the 1:59.49 he set during prelims. California Capital's Evan Virtue touched a distant second in 2:01.09. YOTA's Dominick Glavich wound up third in 2:01.25.

Agua's Annie Zhu touched out Wilton Y's Kaylin Moss, 2:29.06 to 2:29.32, in the women's 200 breast. Both eclipsed Moss' meet record of 2:30.09 set during prelims. Fast Lane's Lysistrati Halkides completed the top three in 2:30.42.

In another exciting finish, Peoria Area's Matthew Elliott knocked off Sandpipers Cody Miller, 2:14.67 to 2:14.91, in the men's 200 breast. Both erased the meet record of 2:15.53 set by Christian Higgins during prelims. Higgins, swimming for New Canaan, wound up fifth overall in 2:19.58, while Nitro's Zachary Gunn took third in 2:17.95.

The distance events closed the night. Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton topped the women's 800 free in 8:39.03. Aquazot's Megan Rankin touched second in 8:40.45, while Long Island's Emily Kelly finished third in 8:40.88.

SwimAtlanta's William Freeman claimed the men's 1500 free title in 15:25.44. The readout cleared the meet record of 15:30.85 set by Connor Signorin in earlier heats. North Baltimore's Andrew Cosgarea placed second in 15:27.21, while Germantown Academy's Arthur Frayler rounded out the top three in 15:30.63.
