USA Swimming Grand Prix, Indianapolis: Michael Phelps Blazes World-Best Time in 200 IM

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 31. THE USA Swimming Grand Prix in Indianapolis came to a close with some scintillating swims throughout the final night, including a blastoff in the 200 IM from superstar Michael Phelps.

Women's 200 fly
Trojan's Katinka Hosszu walked away with the distance fly crown with a 2:07.58. Hosszu's time jumped her to fifth in the world rankings. Ellen Gandy (2:05.95), Jemma Lowe (2:06.37), Cammile Adams (2:06.76) and Jessicah Schipper (2:06.93) are the only to have gone faster this year. Longhorn's Kathleen Hersey placed second in 2:09.92, while California's Dana Vollmer checked in third with a 2:09.96. Hersey moved up to 23rd in the world with her swim, and is the second-fastest American behind Adams.

California's Caitlin Leverenz (2:11.73), Kingfish' Madison Wright (2:11.75), New York's Kim Vandenberg (2:11.88), SMU's Denisa Smolenova (2:12.56) and NBAC's Allison Schmitt (2:14.19) completed the top eight.

Men's 200 fly
Stanford's Bobby Bollier cruised to victory with a 1:56.34, earning himself a seventh-ranked tie with Laszlo Cseh's time from earlier today in Hungary. SwimMAC's Davis Tarwater touched second in 1:58.02, while FAST's Tyler Clary earned third in 1:58.14. The pair moved to 23rd and 25th in the world with their swims.

Athens Bulldog Mark Dylla (1:59.72), FAST's Robert Margalis (2:00.00), NBAC's Chase Kalisz (2:00.82), Bolles' Joseph Schooling (2:03.99) and Concord's Samuel Wilcher (2:04.98) rounded out the championship heat.

Women's 100 breast
Trojan's Jessica Hardy dominated the event with a 1:06.12 for the win, shooting to the top of the world rankings, ahead of a pair of 1:06.88s set by Rebecca Soni and Leiston Pickett. Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard, on the trail of a fifth Olympics appearance, finished second in 1:08.50 for 21st in the world. Center Grove's Emma Schoettmer earned third in 1:08.90.

SwimMAC's Micah Lawrence (1:08.94), SoFlo's Alia Atkinson (1:08.94), Sweden's Rebecca Edjervik (1:09.02), Athens Bulldog Michelle McKeehan (1:09.13) and Florida's Hilda Luthersdottir (1:09.83) picked up the rest of the finale finishes.

Men's 100 breast
Tucson Ford's Marcus Titus snared the breaststroke title with a 1:00.86, while Longhorn's Brendan Hansen took second in 1:01.04. Titus improved to 15th in the world rankings with his swim, while Hansen moved to 18th as the second-fastest American this year behind Titus. SoFlo's Vlad Polyakov placed third this evening in 1:01.48.

Davies' Felipe Lima (1:01.56), Tucson Ford's Clark Burckle (1:01.74), Athens Bulldog Neil Versfeld (1:01.85), California's Martti Aljand (1:02.19) and Miguel Ferreira (1:02.82) placed fourth through eighth.

Women's 100 back
Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin broke a minute for the second time this year, bettering her sixth-ranked season best of 59.92 from the Austin Grand Prix in January. She won this evening in 59.89, just missing moving up the rankings as Julia Wilkinson owns fifth with a 59.85 from the Canadian Olympic Trials this week. California's Stephanie Au placed second in 1:01.30, while Dynamo's Kylie Stewart earned third in 1:02.12.

SMU's Therese Svendsen (1:02.31), Louisville's Eszter Povazsay (1:02.88), Raleigh's Hannah Moore (1:03.42), King's Hannah Weiss (1:04.13) and California's Erica Dagg (1:04.24) turned in the rest of the A final times.

Men's 100 back
SwimMAC's Nick Thoman raced to victory in the event with a 53.85, just shy of his eighth-ranked season best of 53.78 from earlier this month. David Russell finished second in 54.61, while Ryan Lochte and Mathias Gydesen tied for third with 54.75s. Gydesen had been looking for a FINA A cut after just missing the time with a 54.41 in prelims. Denmark gave him a special dispensation to make the Danish Olympic squad in the event if he could post a FINA A cut (54.40) at the meet.

Bolles' Ryan Murphy (54.96), Corvallis' Jacob Pebley (55.76), California's Guy Barnea (56.24) and Pace's Ben Hesen (56.24) also competed in the finale.

Women's 200 IM
California's Caitlin Leverenz scored the top time in the medley with a 2:09.71 for the win, jumping to second in the world. Only Stephanie Rice (2:09.38) and Alicia Coutts (2:09.83) have cleared 2:10 this year. Bolles' Ariana Kukors placed second in 2:10.76, while T2's Elizabeth Pelton checked in with a third-place 2:12.30. Kukors vaulted to sixth in the world with her swim, while Pelton took 13th in the world rankings with her effort.

Trojan's Katinka Hosszu (2:13.14), Trojan's Stina Gardell (2:13.95), T2's Katie Hoff (2:14.99), T2's Erika Erndl (2:16.14) and Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard (2:16.22) placed fourth through eighth.

Men's 200 IM
NBAC's Michael Phelps cleared his meet record in the event with a 1:56.31. That swim bested his 1:56.88 from last year, and smashed Joseph Roebuck's world-leading time of 1:58.16 from British Olympic Trials. Phelps' time this evening is the 23rd fastest of all time, giving Phelps a remarkable 10 of the top 25 times ever in the event. Ryan Lochte is second with nine of the top 25 times in the event, along with the top two times ever (1:54.00, 1:54.10).

Tucson Ford's Darian Townsend placed second in 1:59.28, while Lochte took third in 1:59.37. Townsend improved to eighth in the world with the swim, while Lochte took ninth in the world with his performance.

Lake Forest's Conor Dwyer (2:01.12), FAST's Tyler Clary (2:01.17), OLY's Peter Vanderkaay (2:01.47), California's Martin Liivamagi (2:01.50) and Trojan's Tyler Harris (2:04.59) touched fourth through eighth.

Women's 800 free
NBAC's Gillian Ryan cruised to the win in the distance freestyle event with an 8:32.49, short of her ninth-ranked season best of 8:29.25 from earlier this month. The Fish's Kate Ziegler placed second in 8:33.86, while Germantown's Rachel Zilinskas took third in 8:36.70.

Chile's Kristel Kobrich (8:37.62), Terrapin's Chelsea Chenault (8:39.64), NBAC's Allison Schmitt (8:41.59), Mexico's Patricia Castaneda Miyamoto (8:43.04) and West Virginia's Rachael Burnett (8:45.91) rounded out the top eight.

Men's 1500 free
Dynamo's Matias Koski clipped Germantown's Arthur Frayler, 15:09.17 to 15:09.27, for the distance freestyle title. The duo moved to 10th and 11th in the world rankings with their performances, besting Frayler's season best of 15:12.47 from the CeraVe Invitational in January.

Trojan's Mateusz Sawrymowicz took third in 15:19.35, while FAST's Michael Klueh placed fourth in 15:26.18. Gator's Alejandro Gomez (15:35.95), Germantown's Bryan Draganosky (15:44.87), Kingfish's Nick Arakelian (15:53.61) and Dynamo's Kevin Litherland (15:53.80) placed fifth through eighth.
