USA Swimming Elects Jim Wood as President

DEARBORN, Michigan, September 16. USA Swimming’s House of Delegates voted to elect Jim Wood of Berkeley Heights, N.J., as president of the organization on Saturday. Wood has been involved in USA Swimming’s volunteer leadership for more than 25 years and has served on the board of directors since 1992.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to lead USA Swimming over the next couple of years," Wood said. "I’m very, very pleased with the results of the election of board members and I’m looking forward to working with them as a team and moving USA Swimming forward.”

In his long service to USA Swimming, Wood has served on the following committees: Education, Age Group Planning (Chair), Sports Science and Medicine, Time Standards, Meet Evaluation, Domestic Operations (Coordinator), Strategic Planning, Senior, Open Water and International Relations. He has been part of the Olympic International Operations Committee since 1980 and served as chair from 1992-2004. He also has served on the Steering Committee since 1992 and was the committee chair from 1992-2004. He served as a member of the executive committee since 2004. The 2003 USA Swimming Award winner, Wood most recently served as technical vice president

“USA Swimming has a rich history of superior volunteer leadership and there is absolutely no question that Jim Wood is going to continue that rich tradition,” Chuck Wielgus, executive director of USA Swimming, said. “Jim’s 30-plus years of experience as a coach at the club level of USA Swimming gives him a full understanding and appreciation of the issues that affect our athletes, our coaches, our clubs, our LSCs, all aspects of grassroots swimming in our country right up through our Olympic Team program where he served as the chairman of our National Steering Committee.”

Wood has been the head coach and owner of Berkeley Aquatic Club since 1977. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Wood did his graduate work at the University of North Carolina, where he served as head men’s and women’s swimming coach from 1975-77.

In the international realm, Wood has served on the USA Swimming staffs at the last three Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004) and has represented the organization at international congresses and meetings since 1994.
