COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, September 2. Forty-eight swimmers will represent Team USA at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, from October 14-30, 2011. The U.S. swim team includes eight members of this summer's FINA World Championship roster and 10 swimmers from the 2011 World University Games team. The pool competition will take place October 15-21 and the 10K open water race will be held October 22 in nearby Puerto Vallarta.
Highlighting the U.S. team are 2008 Olympic silver medalist Elaine Breeden (Lexington, Ky.), 2011 World University Games gold medalist Annie Chandler (San Antonio, Texas), and five-time Pan Am Games medalist Robert Margalis (Flushing, N.Y.). The open water team will be led by 2011 USA Swimming 10K Open Water National Champions Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.), and Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.). Meyer was also the first U.S. swimmer to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Also featured on the men's side will be Marcus Titus (Tucson, Ariz.) who finished third in the 100m breast at the 2011 National Championships, Titus most recently captured the World Deaf Swimming Championship in the same event.
A complete roster of the 2011 U.S. Pan American Games team roster can be found here.
The Pan American Games are held every four years, in the year before the summer Olympic Games and are the second-largest multi-sport event behind only the summer Olympics. Swimmers were selected for the Pan American Games based upon their performance at the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships that took place August 2-6, 2011 in Palo Alto, Calif. Full selection criteria can be found here.
In addition to the announcement of the 2011 Pan American Games roster, USA Swimming has also named the coaching staff for the Games in Mexico. Chuck Batchelor will lead the women and Dick Shoulberg will coach the men in Guadalajara. Batchelor will be assisted by Mark Bernardino, John Morse and Bill Rose while Shoulberg will be joined by assistant coaches Kelly Kremer, Kate Lundsten and Steve Morsilli.
All members of the U.S. Pan American Games swim team are subject to final approval by the United States Olympic Committee.
