USA Short Course National Championships: Day Two Prelims

ATLANTA, Georgia, November 30. WITH day one in the books, the USA Short Course National Championships commenced the second day of competition with prelims in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay. With two American records last night, will day two offer up even more incredible performances?

Women's 400 IM
Kathleen Hersey claimed the top spot in finals with a time of 4:11.05, finishing just ahead of what had previously been the fastest time in prelims set by Kaitlin Sandeno a heat earlier with a 4:11.20.

Kirsten Smith (4:13.72) and Ava Ohlgren (4:14.57) finished third and fourth, while Julie Stupp (4:14.87), Leslie Vanwinkle (4:16.46), Mari Embertson (4:16.01) and Jessica Rodriquez (4:16.93) rounded out the top eight.

Men's 400 IM
Ryan Lochte continued his remarkable meet as he dropped a strong prelim time of 3:45.00. The question remaining tonight is whether Lochte can cut nine seconds from his prelim mark and threaten Michael Phelps' American record of 3:36.26 set in 2006.

Erik Vendt placed second in 3:47.52, while Robert Margalis took third in 3:48.93. Tyler Harris (3:50.58), Eric Shanteau (3:51.01), Ian Clark (3:51.27), Pat Mellors (3:51.64) and Clark Burckle (3:52.39) completed the top eight in the preliminary session.

Women's 100 butterfly
Natalie Coughlin will have 49 on her mind in this evening's finals after clocking a 51.13 to pace prelims. Coughlin's reigning American record stands at 50.01 from 2002. With her recent assault on her many five-year-old marks, it would not be a surprise to see Coughlin dip into the 49-second range.

Rachel Komisarz will provide some added incentive after clocking a second-place 51.28, while Dana Vollmer took third in 51.66.

Mary DeScenza (52.47), Samantha Woodward (52.70), Whitney Lopus (52.71), Amanda Sims (52.74) and Kim Vandenberg (53.24) completed the top eight.

Men's 100 butterfly
Matt Grevers topped preliminary qualifying with a time of 46.69 in the men's 100 fly. Davis Tarwater joined him in the sub-47 range with a second-place effort of 46.99.

Randall Tom (47.17) and Jayme Cramer (47.45) took third and fourth, while Dough Lennox (47.47) and Fred Bousquet (47.55) placed fifth and sixth. Ben Wildman-Tobriner (47.74) and Stefan Ghergel (47.76) rounded out the top eight.

Nick Walkotten will be the first bumped up to A finals after international-swimmer relegations take place after a ninth-place 47.97. With Bousquet being dropped to B finals, will this be another possibility of him swimming the fastest time in finals without actually winning the event like the 50 free last night?

Women's 200 freestyle
Kara Lynn Joyce paced the pack during prelims with a time of 1:45.84. It will be something to watch if she can cut enough time tonight to return the favor after losing her 50 free American record to Natalie Coughlin last night. Coughlin holds the American standard in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.66 from January of this year.

Caitlin Geary placed second in qualifying with a time of 1:46.00, while Kim Vandenberg took third in 1:46.40.

Emily Kukors (1:46.56), Megan Romano (1:46.92), Erin Reilly (1:46.95), Mary DeScenza (1:46.97) and Rachel Komisarz (1:47.19) took care of the rest of the top eight spots.

Peter Vandkerkaay led all swimmers during prelims with a time of 1:34.55. Matt Grevers took second in 1:35.45, while Michael Phelps placed third in 1:35.47.

Chris Dejong (1:35.52), Davis Tarwater (1:35.59), Doug Van Wie (1:35.65), Jayme Cramer (1:35.66) and Shaun Phillips (1:36.07) comprised the rest of the top eight finishers.

Women's 100 breaststroke
Jessica Hardy put together the lone sub-1:00 time to claim the top spot out of prelims when she touched in 59.63.

Elizabeth Tinnon, a heat before Hardy, tied with Keri Hehn for second with matching times of 1:00.22.

Kasey Carlson (1:01.19), Caitlin Leverenz (1:01.31), Elle Weberg (1:01.55), Spindrift Beck (1:01.62) and Kara Denby (1:02.15) made up the rest of the top eight.

Men's 100 breaststroke
Mike Alexandrov will be gunning for his own American record of 51.56 tonight from the B final after being relegated due to his international status. He did, however, qualify first with a time of 53.11.

Mark Gangloff placed second in 53.59, while Ryan Lochte will be a tired man tonight after placing third with a time of 53.97.

Vlad Polyakov (54.34), David Maras (54.44), Kevin Zakrzewski (54.50), Eric Shanteau (54.63) and John Dorr (54.70) each also finished in the top eight during prelims.

Women's 100 backstroke
Natalie Coughlin will be looking to drop another one of her American records tonight, this time in the 100 back as she qualified first with a 52.77. It will take a blistering swim tonight, though, as she set the standard with a 49.97 in 2002.

Mary DeScenza placed second in 53.41, while Margaret Hoelzer finished third in 53.42. Sherry Tsai touched fourth in 53.49, while Leila Vaziri picked up fifth in 53.65.

Lauren Rogers (53.69), Rachel Goh (53.94) and Jacque Fessel (54.10) completed the top eight.

Men's 100 backstroke
With Ryan Lochte withdrawing from the event, the title is up for grabs tonight. Doug Van Wie clocked in at 46.10 to lead qualifying, while Matt Grevers placed second in 46.22.

Randall Bal, fresh off a FINA World Cup circuit win and with $100,000 in his pocket, will be looking to run his backstroke streak to 22 after sweep the events in the World Cup series. Bal took third in qualifying with a 46.30.

Fellow World Cup competitor Hongzhe Sun finished fourth in 46.48, while Adam Mania took fifth in 47.11.

Bryan Lundquist (47.16), James Wike (47.32) and Peter Marshall (47.79) completed the rest of the top eight.
