USA, Italy Tie in First Round of Women’s Water Polo

FUKUOKA, Japan. July 18. THE USA tied Italy 8-8 in first day action in women's water polo at the Nishi Civic Pool Complex in Fukuoka.

The game was one of six played in today's preliminary round. In other games, the Netherlands had a surprisingly tough team in beating Japan, 8-7; Russia trounced New Zealand 19-4; Kazakhstan upended Brazil 5-4; Hungary edged Canada 5-4; and Greece beat Australia 9-7.

Tomorrow the USA faces Kazakhstan; Russia meets Brazil; Japan goes up against Australia; the Netherlands takes on Canada; Greece faces Hungary; and New Zealnd clashes with Italy. On Saturday, the USA plays Brazil.

The men's competition begins tomorrow.
