US Olympic Diving Trials: Garcia Takes the Lead in Prelims of 10-meter Platform

Garcia and Segerlin Move On to Platform Finals at Olympic Trials * June 7, 2004

ST. PETERS, Mo., June 7. AUBURN University diver Caesar Garcia advanced into the finals of the platform competition at the 2004 Olympic Team Trials, which began on Monday at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Mo.

Garcia finished the day as the top qualifier on the platform, posting a 647.25, easily distancing himself from the current second-place diver, Thomas Finchum (620.13).

"Caesar did a great job today. For the past four years we have been teaching the divers to stay the same in every dive, and that was what he did today," AU Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer said.

"He was solid all the way through. He set himself up nicely for the finals and is now six dives away from going to Athens (Greece) this summer."

The platform finals, which will carry over the current scores, will not be contested until Saturday night and include the top 12 divers from Monday's prelims and semifinals.
