UNLV, Washington State vs. Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona, November 7. THE Arizona State women's swimming and diving team made an statement in its home opener as they crushed UNLV and Washington State. The Sun Devils defeated the Running Rebels 188.5-108.5 and the Cougars 209-78. The ASU men's team fell in their contest 189-105 to UNLV. The women improved to 2-1 while the men dropped to 0-3.

Freshman Paige Schultz, senior Jamie Martinez, senior Ashton Aubry, junior Brittany Jumer and sophomore Jordyn Green were multiple winners for the Sun Devils. Schultz began her meet winning the 200 free and never looked back. With a time of 1:50.63, she out-touched the second-place finisher by over a second and a half. Schultz followed that performance up with a 51.97 finish in the 100 free. Schultz, who is strong in multiple events, swam her way to a 500 free win as well, finishing in 4:59.79.

Martinez looks to have a solid senior year. The San Jose, Calif., native competed in the backstroke events, taking first in both. Martinez first won the 100 back with a 57.49 and also took first in the 200 back, finishing in 2:03.48.

Ashton Aubry opened her season with two wins for the Sun Devils. The two-time NCAA qualifier, won the 200 fly in 2:01.37. In the 100 fly, she hit the wall at 55.38. Green earned wins in both breaststroke events. She clocked in a time of 1:03.52 in the 100 breast. Green, who qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman last season, crushed the competition in the 200 breast, winning in 2:16.43.

Junior Jumer won her third and fourth straight diving event in a row. The Minnesotan earned 324.53 in the 3-meter and scored 273.75 on the 1-meter. The women's 400 medley relay team of Martinez, Rebecca Ejdervik, Aubry and Katie Haron took first with a time 3:48.49.

Freshman Riley McCormick was the lone winner on the men's side. The Canadian Olympian took both the 1-meter and the 3-meter, scoring 365.33 in the 3-meter and 348.53 on the 1-meter. Xavier Mohammed had a strong meet, taking second in the 1000 free (9:12.35), 200 fly (1:53.04) and 200 breast (2:10.30). Senior Max Laney had two second place finishes with one in the 200 IM (1:57.04) and the 200 back (1:51.49)

The Sun Devils host USC and UCLA next weekend.
