University of Utah Announces Massive Coaching Staff Overhaul

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. HEAD swimming coach Greg Winslow has announced four new additions to his staff. Charlie King and Marie Marsman have accepted positions as assistant coaches and recruiting coordinators while former Ute diver Kelsey Patterson joins the staff as the diving coach. Sean Biedermann rounds out the new hires as a graduate assistant.

King, who will also serve as the men's recruiting coordinator, comes to Utah after a one-year stint as the head swimming coach at Millikin University. Since 2004, he has also served as a counselor and coach at the Stanford International Swim Camp. King worked at St. Cloud State University from 2005-07, where his athletes won five All-America honors and set nine school records. He has had additional coaching experience at Ausburg College (2003-05), the Monticello Swim Club (1998-2004), Monticello High School (2000-03), and St. Cloud Apollo High School (1998-2000).

"Charlie will help give us a well-rounded staff," Winslow said. "He has a phenomenal understanding of the administrative side of the job and his connections to the Midwest will be beneficial for our recruiting efforts. The way that he interacts with athletes will make the deck a fun place to be."

Marsman comes to Utah from Indiana University, where she worked the past two years with the men's and women's teams that both placed 10th at the men's and women's NCAA swimming championships in 2008. She has also coached at a number of high schools in California. Marsman was a standout swimmer at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., where she was a seven-time NCAA Division III champion, setting nine school records and two Division III records. She qualified for the 2004 Olympic Trials in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events, winning a silver medal at the World University Games in 2003 as a member of the United States' 400-meter free relay team. In addition to her assistant coaching duties, she will coordinate women's recruiting.

"Marie brings a lot to the team through her experiences and leadership in international competition," Winslow said. "She has a great work ethic and a desire to be the best coach she can be."

Patterson, the most decorated diver in Utah history, was a two-time Mountain West Conference Diver of the Year (2006 and 2007). She won five MWC Championships diving events in three years, while finishing second twice, after transferring from Auburn after her freshman season. Patterson holds school records in 1-meter diving (6 dives), 3-meter diving (6 and 11 dives) and platform diving. Her junior year, she competed in all three diving events at the NCAA Championships, finishing 30th in 1-meter diving (245.40), 18th in 3-meter diving (289.35) and 21st in the platform event (205.1).

"Kelsey is the best women's diver Utah has ever had," Winslow said. "She is part of the tradition here and will ignite a fire under that part of the program to continue that excellence. Her ties to both Canada and Utah will help make Utah a prominent diving program."

Biedermann is coming off an All-American career at Penn State. He earned honorable mention All-America honors with the 400 free relay team at the 2008 NCAA Championships. The past two seasons, he has competed at the NCAA Championships individually in the 200 free and 200 IM, while also swimming with the 200 and 400 free relay teams. Biedermann was a four-time scorer at the Big Ten Championships in the 200 IM and ranks second in school history in the event. He also ranks ninth in Nittany Lion history in the 200 free.

"I was Sean's age group coach in Colorado Springs six years ago," Winslow said. "He already knows how I coach and what my goals are. He has experience as an All-American as well as a passion for the sport. Sean knows how to interact with athletes and will help give us a link between the coaches and swimmers."
