WILMINGTON, North Carolina, May 30. UNIVERSITY of North Carolina, Wilmington Chancellor Gary Miller announced this week that the men's and women's swim and dive teams will not be cut, as reported by Star News Online.
The teams were reportedly in jeopardy of being eliminated after an Intercollegiate Athletics Review Committee recommended that UNCW drop five varsity programs to offset recent financial woes. In addition to the men's and women's swim and dive programs, men's cross country, men's indoor track and softball were in jeopardy. None of the jeopardized sports programs will be cut, mainly because of an outpouring of public support for the teams.
The swim and dive squads were the most vocal against their removal. They immediately created a petition on change.org that gained nearly 14.5k supporters in just over two weeks' time. The swim team also sent a letter to Chancellor Miller detailing the reasons why their team should remain in the varsity program.
The UNCW men's team has won 12 straight Colonial Athletic Championships under longtime head coach Dave Allen, who has been with the programs for 35 seasons. The IARC reported that the five-sport cut would have saved the athletic department $800,000 annually.
