United States Names Squad for World Short Course Champs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, October 25. USA Swimming has released the names of the individuals who will represent the United States at next year’s World Short Course Championships in Shanghai, China. Leading the way on the women’s side are two of the nation’s top youngsters, Kate Ziegler (The Fish) and Jessica Hardy (Irvine Novaquatics).

Last summer, Ziegler walked away from the World Championships in Montreal with gold-medal hauls in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles. As for Hardy, now a freshman at California, she established a world record in the 100 breaststroke, clocking 1:06.20 in the semifinals, and secured a silver medal in the final. Hardy also took silver in the 50 breast.

For the men, Ryan Lochte is the headlining name. A University of Florida standout, Lochte was a double-medal winner at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and won bronze medals at last summer’s World Champs in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke. He will be joined on the men’s squad by Larsen Jensen, the American-record holder in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles.

The World Short Course Championships are scheduled for April 5-9 and members of the United States squad will also take a trip to Beijing, site of the 2008 Olympics. Here are the individuals who will represent the Stars and Stripes in China.
