United States Men Topple Cuba at Water Polo World Championships

MONTREAL, Canada, July 20. FOLLOWING up on an opening-day victory over Japan, the United States men’s water polo team trounced Cuba on Wednesday, 13-6, at the World Championships. The triumph kept the U.S. near the top of the Group B standings, as only Serbia and Montenegro (3-0) sits ahead. The United States’ next match is against the Serbs.

Tony Azevedo led the American attack with a five-goal performance and tallied twice during a one-minute span in the second quarter. The U.S. sprinted to a 6-1 edge and also held leads of 10-2 and 11-3. Jeff Powers also turned in a stellar showing, as he found the net on four occasions. Meanwhile, Ryan Bailey also made an offensive impact. While the men have Thursday as an off day, the United States women will be in action against China.
