UCSD Sweeps UC Santa Cruz

LA JOLLA, Cal., Jan. 25. THE UC San Diego men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept visiting
UC Santa Cruz in a dual meet at UCSD's Canyonview Pool Saturday afternoon to close out the home portion of their 2002-03 schedule.

The men defeated the Division III Banana Slugs by the final score of 165-122 while the Triton women cruised to a 171-122 victory.

On the men's side, UCSD sophomore Brett Going was a double winner, capturing both the 100 Breast (1:01.62) and 200 Breast (2:14.07).

Fellow sophomore Cole Paffett took top honors in the 1650 Free (17:28.14) while Mark Tate (50 Free/22.19), Toshio Yamamoto (200 Back/2:02.87), Danny Behrens (100 Free/48.91) and Michael Baier (200 IM/1:58.43), also all second-year Tritons, were other individual event

Tate, Behrens, senior co-captain Dagart Allison and sophomore Brady Gosling swam 3:15.30 to place first in the 400 Free Relay.

Sophomore Frances Tran was a standout for the women, racing to victories in the 200 Fly (2:09.47) and 200 Back (2:12.95), and swimming on the triumphant 400
Medley Relay (4:02.38).

Senior co-captain Jennifer Watanabe and sophomores
Rosanna Delurgio and Elaine Engel rounded out the relay. Tran also finished second to freshman Sarah Grant (1:00.13) in the 100 Fly.

Freshman diver Jennifer Margrave earned wins on both the one-meter and three-meter boards while sophomores Kimmie Rice and Christine Hyjek took the 100 Back (1:04.26) and 200 Breast (2:27.63), respectively.

Engel was a winner in the 50 Free (25.37) and Delurgio won the 100 Breast (1:04.88).

With the Saturday sweep, the Triton women improve their dual record to 4-2 while the men conclude their dual season at 1-4. The UCSD women are next in the pool in more dual meet action at Division I crosstown rival University of San Diego next Saturday, February 1. The first race is at 12:00 noon.

The Triton men's and women's swimming and diving teams will then have two and a half weeks to prepare for the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships, to be held in Long Beach, Thursday-Saturday, February 20-22.
