UCLA Women Show USC No Mercy, Defeating the Trojans 211.5 – 88.5

WESTWOOD, Calif, February 15. THIS afternoon, the No. 7 UCLA Bruins swimming and diving team made history. In the annual meet against the USC Trojans, ranked No. 11 in the nation, UCLA had a decisive victory, winning 211.50-88.50. The Bruins' victory marked the end of a 10-year Trojan win streak. UCLA is now 8-2 on the season, 5-2 in the Pac-10. USC is 2-5 overall, 1-4 in the Pac-10.

The Bruins kicked off the meet by finishing one-two in the 400 yard Medley Relay. The team of Katie Arnold, Leslie Hovsepian, Kim Vandenberg and Sara Platzer won in a NCAA 'B' time and facility record 3:44.69. Bruins Jill Jenkins, Lindsay Etter, Beth Goodwin and Keiko Price set the previous record of 3:45.94 in 1998. Naoko Watanabe, Eileen Seissen, Lindsey Buck and Kendall Butler placed second in 3:50.64.

The 200-yard Freestyle was the first of six UCLA sweeps on the day. Senior Malin Svahnstrom won in a NCAA 'B' time of 1:49.87. Junior Kim Scarborough was second in 1:51.99, followed by senior Jackie Lobdell in third in 1:52.26. In the 100 yard Breast, Shellene Catalano led a Bruin sweep, finishing in 1:04.49. Hovsepian was second (1:05.36) and Seissen was third (1:05.41). Platzer led sweeps of the 50 and 100 Freestyle. In the 50 Freestyle, she won in 23.05 (NCAA 'B' time). Thurman was second in 23.37 (NCAA 'B' time) and Kellin Chatfield was third in 24.37. In the 100 Freestyle, Platzer won in 50.70 (NCAA 'B' time), Thurman was second (50.89, NCAA 'B' time) and Svahnstrom was third (51.27, NCAA 'B' time).

The Bruin divers swept the one- and three-meter events. On one-meter, sophomore Amanda Blong won with 283.95 points. Sophomore Paige Thompson was second (280.50) and redshirt freshman Carly Banks was third (264.15). On three-meter, Thompson won with 319.28 points. Junior Janine Strack was second (266.63). And, sophomore Sara Clark was third (253.28).

In the 100 yard Backstroke, Arnold won in a NCAA 'B' time of 56.06. Watanabe was third in 57.27. Arnold also won the 200 Backstroke (2:00.83, NCAA 'B' time). Watanabe finished second in 2:01.66 (NCAA 'B' time). In the 200 Breast, Catalano won in a NCAA 'B' time of 2:17.74. Freshman Jeana Fuccillo was second in 2:20.85.

The Bruins placed second and third in five events. UCLA freshman Katie Nelson placed second in the 1650 Freestyle in a NCAA 'A' time of 16:23.52. Freshman Jane Imagane placed third in a NCAA 'A' time of 16:34.42. In the 500 Freestyle, Nelson and Imagane finished second and third again in 4:50.24 and 4:51.32, respectively. Both are NCAA 'B' cut times.

In the 200 yard Butterfly, Kim Vandenberg was second in a NCAA 'A' time of 1:57.29. Senior Kristen Lewis finished third in 2:01.27. In the 100 Butterfly, Vandenberg placed second in 53.87 (NCAA 'B' time). Junior Lindsey Buck was third in 55.29 (NCAA 'B' time). And, in the 200 IM, Svahnstrom finished second (2:04.87) and Scarborough was third (2:06.43).

The Bruins sealed their victory by finishing one-three in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The team of Vandenberg, Platzer, Thurman and Svahnstrom won in 3:24.93. The squad of Butler, Smart, Chatfield and Nelson finished third in 3:30.13.

The Trojans won five events on the day. USC junior Kaitlin Sandeno won three events and set a pair of facility records. In the 200 yard Butterfly, she won in a NCAA 'A' time of 1:55.23. She also broke the previous facility record of 1:59.80 set by Arizona's Erin Vogt in 1998. In the 100 yard Butterfly, she won in a NCAA 'A' time of 53.61, also setting a facility record. The prior record of 53.76 was set in 2000 by Cal's Joscelin Yeo. Sandeno ended the day by winning the 200 yard IM in 2:03.11 (NCAA 'B' time). In the 1650 yard Freestyle, USC freshman Kalyn Keller set a Men's Gym Pool record of 16:12.06. UCLA's Sheri Smith set the previous record of 16:36.75 in 1988.
