UCLA vs. USC

LOS ANGELES, California, February 13. FRESHMAN Katinka Hosszu won three races and senior Rebecca Soni and freshman diver Victoria Ishimatsu each won twice to lead the No. 9 USC women's swimming and diving team to a 160-140 win over No. 19 UCLA during a rain-drenched two-hour meet at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium on Friday (Feb. 13).

The win, which upped USC's record to 6-1 overall, 5-1 in the Pac-10 and extended Troy's lead in the series to 19-16, secured five points in the Lexus Gauntlet competition, the season-long competition between USC and UCLA in all sports. USC now leads 35-25 (with many cross-town battles still to be hashed out). The Bruins are now 4-5, 2-5.

USC opened the meet with a win in the 200y medley relay as seniors Kristen Lahey, Soni, Katy Houston and Rachael Waller — Troy's complete senior class – took first in 1:40.66, a season best time and an NCAA ‘B' cut.

UCLA's Danielle Milligan (16:24.50) and Samantha Vanden Berge (16:31.76) swept the 1650y free with USC sophomore Ellie Doran taking third (16:31.78) in a season-best time, one just shy of the NCAA ‘B' standard.

Hosszu led wire-to-wire in the 200y free, winning in 1:46.73 with three Bruins finishing 2-3-4. UCLA's Madeleine Stanton came back to win the 100y back in a meet record 53.08. USC's Dina Hegazy was second (54.92) in a season-best effort.

Soni won the 100y breast in 1:01.37 with Houston trailing her for second in 1:02.93. Trojan freshman Ania Kowalczyk made it a clean sweep by taking third in 1:03.93.

Hosszu (1:57.43) and fellow freshman Tanya Krisman (1:57.65) finished 1-2 in the 200y fly. Both Trojans trailed UCLA's Yasi Jahanshahi after the first 150 yards, but caught her with about 25 yards to go and passed her for the 1-2 finish. Jananshahi finished third in 1:58.36.

UCLA's Anna Poteete won the 50y free in 23.10, edging USC's Lahey, who was second in 23.49.

Ishimatsu, competing adjacent to the pool, won the 1-meter in 302.77. She later completed her springboard sweep with a 3-meter win with 3:09.38 points.

Lahey came back to win the 100y free in 49.47, a season-best effort. She raced out to a big early lead, holding off Poteete over the final 15 yards for the win. Poteete was second in 49.61 while Waller was third (50.60).

Stanton completed a sweep of the 200y back with a win in 1:54.87, a meet and USC pool record. Hegazy, the former pool record holder, was second in 1:57.36.

Soni won the 200y breast in 2:10.l42, a meet record with Houston second in 2:13.33.

Hosszu completed her three-win day with a first in the 500y free in 4:48.29, edging UCLA's Emily Bibb (4:49.70). Doran (4:52.28) held off UCLA's Alex Sullivan (4:53.65) for third.

Krisman won the 100y fly in 53.81 with UCLA's Stanton second (54.84). UCLA's Lauren Hall won the 400y IM (4:13.44, a meet record) with Milligan second (4:16.90).

The Bruins finished the meet by taking the 200y free relay in 1:32.07 with USC second in 1:32.74.
