U.S. World Champs Trials, Day 2 Finals: Tarwater and Raab Top the Field in 200 Butterfly

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., April 2. WHEN opportunity presents itself, the most ambitious individuals tend to take advantage. Count Davis Tarwater and Michael Raab in that company.

When Michael Phelps decided to not defend his 2001 and 2003 world titles in the 200 butterfly, a major opening on the American scene was created. Suddenly, an event that was once a U.S. strength – Phelps and Tom Malchow ruled from 2000-04 – was a question mark.

Tarwater and Raab, however, have done their part to ensure the U.S. remains a player in the discipline. Saturday night, the duo finished one-two at the World Champs Trials, with Tarwater clocking in at 1:58.71. Raab was just behind in 1:58.79. They were the only men to break the two-minute mark.

Last week, Tarwater cruised to the NCAA title in the event. After adding a win at these Trials, there's no questioning that the University of Michigan swimmer is benefiting from training with Phelps and coach Bob Bowman in Ann Arbor.

Raab and Texas' Rainer Kendrick were the pacesetters for the first two laps, although Tarwater was right in the mix. After the third lap, the race had become a three-man battle between Tarwater, Raab and Daniel Cruz. But Cruz faded to seventh on the final lap and Kendrick could manage only fifth.

If the United States is expected to medal in Montreal, Tarwater and Raab must continue to drop time. But with way Tarwater has looked and with his ability to stay strong throughout the grueling event, it wouldn't be surprising if he made an international impact.
