U.S. Women’s Water Polo Finds Olympic Aquatic Centre Ready to Go; They Best Host Greece 10-3 in Test Match

ATHENS, Greece. August 12. THE USA women blew past Greece in a pre-Olympic contest, 10-3. Team USA was sharp on both ends of the ball in the Olympic Aquatic Centre Test Match, as reported by USA Water Polo.

It was a win for the Olympic Aquatic Centre technical staff as much as it was a win for the U.S. women’s water polo team. Everything ran smoothly–from shot clocks and introductions to counterattacks and skip shots–in Team USA’s win over Olympic host Greece tonight (Thursday).

Greece, one of the game’s most improved teams in the last year and a half, looked strong early but succumbed to Team USA’s conditioning and
counterattack in the late going. Team USA used a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach in the second half.

“Our defense was in high gear the whole game,” said U.S. head coach Guy Baker. “We wore them down on the counterattack and our 5-on-6 defense was good. There was no real focal point tonight; we were just working on what we needed to work on to get ready for next week. Overall, I was really pleased with our performance.”

The U.S. will play the opening game of the 2004 Women’s Water Polo Olympic Tournament against World Cup champion Hungary at 9:30 a.m. on Monday (August 16).
