U.S. Women’s Water Polo Downs Canada, 12-3

MONTREAL, Canada, December 4. THE USA Women's Senior National Team rebounded after an opening night loss to Australia to defeat Canada 12-3 last night on the second day of the 2009 Canada Cup. A balanced scoring attack featuring two goals apiece from Lauren Wenger, Melissa Seidemann, Michelle Stein, and Courtney Mathewson along with a solid defensive effort in cage from Tumua Anae propelled the team to the win.

After Canada scored the first goal of the game the United States opened up a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter after allowing the Canadians to score first thanks to scores from Wenger, Mathewson, and Jillian Kraus. In the second period they expanded out to a 7-1 lead with goals from Wenger, Stein, Christina Hewko, and Forel Davies. The third quarter was more of the same as the United States kept Canada off the board and added more scoring. Stein, Seidemann, and Stephanie Schnugg all lit the proverbial lamp to build a 10-1 lead. The final period of action saw Canada score twice but it wasn't enough with Team USA adding two final goals from Seidemann and Mathewson en route to the victory.

"The ladies played outstanding in all phases of the game. They played with great poise and confidence from the first whistle. I was very proud to see this group of women play such high level water polo," said Head Coach Dan Klatt who is guiding the team at the Canada Cup.

Next up is a match tonight against Italy at 6:00pm est/3:00pm pst.
