U.S. Short Course Nationals: Mike Alexandrov Sets American Record in 100 Breast, Katinka Hosszu Smokes 400 IM

COLUMBUS, Ohio, December 3. THE second night of short course yard swimming is complete at the U.S. Short Course Nationals.

Tucson Ford's Mike Alexandrov lowered his American record in the men's 100 breast with a winning time of 51.35. That swim beat his American record of 51.56 set at the 2007 NCAA Division I Championships. Only Damir Dugonjic has been faster with the U.S. Open standard of 50.86 from the 2009 NCAA Division I Championships. Tucson Ford teammates Marcus Titus (51.90) and Clark Burckle (51.98) swept the podium. Titus moved to seventh all time, while Burckle is already eighth with a lifetime best of 51.89.

USC's Katinka Hosszu cleared the meet record in the women's 400 IM with a winning time of 4:00.03. That effort pushed her to second all time in the event behind only Julia Smit (3:58.23). Hosszu jumped ahead of Dagny Knutson (4:00.62) and Katie Hoff (4:00.66). Smit wound up taking second in 4:03.55, while California's Caitlin Leverenz grabbed third in 4:05.04.

Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers improved to third all time in the men's 100 back with a winning time of 44.82. Only Ryan Lochte (44.60) and Ben Hesen (44.72) placed second and third. California's David Russell finished second in 45.58, while SwimMAC's Nick Thoman snagged third in 46.34.

Trojan's Jessica Hardy put up a blazing time of 58.41 in the women's 100 breast. That swim beat Rebecca Soni's meet record of 58.62 set last year, and moved Hardy up to sixth in the all-time rankings. Tucson Ford's Ann Chandler took second in 58.63, just off her second-ranked 58.06 from last year's NCAA Championships. Minnesota's Jillian Tyler rounded out the podium with a third-place 58.78.

FAST's Robert Margalis dominated the men's 400 IM in 3:40.37, nearly clearing his ninth-ranked lifetime best of 3:39.92 from the 2003 NCAA Division I Championships. Tucson Ford's Jack Brown finished second in 3:46.94, while Peoria Area's Matthew Elliott picked up third in 3:47.28.

USC's Lyndsay De Paul snared the women's 100 fly title in 51.46, improving upon her 14th-ranked lifetime best of 51.49 set during prelims. Stanford's Elaine Breeden finished second in 52.31, while California's Amanda Sims earned third in 52.40.

Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers captured the men's 100 fly in a meet-record 45.07. That swim beat Masayuki Kishida's 2008 meet mark of 45.20, and jumped up to eighth all time in the event. California's Thomas Shields finished second in 45.33, while SwimMAC's Davis Tarwater earned third in 46.41.

Four swimmers clocked 1:44s in the women's 200 free with Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin winning in 1:44.23. Palo Alto Stanford's Jasmine Tosky touched second in 1:44.63, while California's Sara Isakovic placed third in 1:44.66. FAST's Kara Lynn Joyce wound up fourth in 1:44.97.

Rexford Tullius touched out Longhorn's Michael Klueh, 1:35.03 to 1:35.14, in the men's 200 free. USC's Clement Lefert took third in 1:35.15, while Daytona Beach's Ryan Lochte earned fourth in 1:35.42.

USC's Presley Bard grabbed the women's 100 back title in 51.82, while Gator's Gemma Spofforth placed second in 52.13. GTAC's Olivia Smoliga rounded out the top three in 52.44.

California's Cindy Tran, Caitlin Leverenz, Colleen Fotsch and Liv Jensen cruised to a meet record in the women's 200 medley relay with a winning time of 1:36.79. Southern California's Presley Bard, Kasey Carlson, Lyndsay De Paul and Joan Christel Simms touched second in 1:37.31. California's Deborah Roth, Melissa Bates, Amanda Sims and Erica Dagg took third in 1:39.86.

SwimMAC's Nick Thoman, Nelson Westby, Davis Tarwater and Josh Schneider topped the men's 200 medley relay in a meet-record 1:25.12. California's Mathias Gydesen, Nolan Koon, Thomas Shields and Nathan Adrian touched just behind in 1:25.39. Southern California's Nick Karpov, Dillon Connolly, Chase Bloch and Vlad Morozov finished third in 1:26.88.

USC's Katinka Hosszu, Haley Anderson, Amanda Smith and Eleanor Doran won the women's 800 free relay in 7:07.11. California's Hannah Wilson, Nathalie Lindborg, Erica Dagg and Katie Kastes took second in 7:09.14. Indiana's Margaux Farrell, Brittany Strumbel, Jessica White and Taylor Wohrley earned third in 7:09.69.

USC's Clement Lefert, Dimitri Colupaev, James White and John Wagner dominated the men's 800 free relay in 6:22.61. Ohio State's Zachary Holmes, Lincoln Fahrbach, Stephen Sakaris and Tim Phillips touched second in 6:27.81. California's Thomas Shields, Jeremy Bagshaw, Samuel Metz and Ben Hinshaw garnered third in 6:29.26.
