U.S. Short Course Nationals: Katinka Hosszu Sets Meet Record

COLUMBUS, Ohio, December 2. THE first night of three evenings of short course yard racing came to a close at the U.S. Short Course Nationals held in Columbus.

USC's Katinka Hosszu tore through the women's 200 IM with a scorching fast time of 1:53.47. That swim shot her to fourth all time in the event behind Julia Smit (1:52.31), Kathleen Hersey (1:53.33) and Ariana Kukors (1:53.45). She also beat Dagny Knutson's meet record of 1:54.03 set in 2008. Stanford's Smit finished second overall in 1:54.78, while Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin snagged third in 1:55.32 to move to 20th in the all-time rankings.

Newly-named Swimming World Magazine World Swimmer of the Year Ryan Lochte overtook Trojan's Markus Rogan, 1:42.60 to 1:42.94, to capture the men's 200 IM crown. Rogan moved to 16th on the all-time list, while Lochte already owns the top time ever with a 1:40.08 from 2007. FAST's Robert Margalis pocketed third-place honors with a time of 1:43.56.

In an exciting finale, FAST's Kara Lynn Joyce grabbed a touch-out triumph in the women's 50 free with a 22.17. Meanwhile, Trojan's Jessica Hardy tied Palo Alto Stanford's Madeline Schaefer with matching times of 22.18. California's Nathan Adrian followed with a blazing time of 19.00 for the men's 50 free triumph. Teammate William Copeland took second in 19.21, while Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers claimed third in 19.30.

USC's Haley Anderson held off a hard-charging Mission Aurora's Bonnie Brandon, 4:38.54 to 4:38.69, in the women's 500 free. Ohio State's Samantha Cheverton completed the podium with a third-place time of 4:39.71. Longhorn's Michael Klueh dominated the men's 500 free with a strong time of 4:14.22, while USC's Richard Charlesworth finished second in 4:17.88. Tucson Ford's Jean Basson earned third in 4:17.95.

Southern California's Kasey Carlson, Presley Bard, Lyndsay De Paul and Lindsay Parrish won the women's 200 free relay in 1:29.57. California's Hannah Wilson, Nathalie Lindborg, Colleen Fotsch and Liv Jensen earned second in 1:29.60, while Palo Alto Stanford's Schaefer, Ally Howe, Sarah Liang and Jasmine Tosky captured third in 1:30.15.

USC swept the freestyle relays with Vlad Morozov, Emmett Walling, Clement Lefert and Jeffery Daniels claimed the men's 200 free relay in 1:17.90, while SwimMAC's Eugene Godsoe, Josh Schneider, Davis Tarwater and Kip Darmody picked up second in 1:18.70. California's Adrian, Josh Daniels, Christopher Rogers and Alexander Cushing wound up third in 1:18.81. Adrian put on a show in his 50 free leadoff with a sterling time of 19.05, his first of two 19.0 times this evening. Schneider (19.21) and Lefert (19.27) had the most impressive relay splits.

Ohio State's Andrew Elliott, Elliott Keefer, Quincy Lee and Tim Phillips won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:10.07. SwimMAC's Nick Thoman, Nelson Westby, Eugene Godsoe and Josh Schneider finished second in 3:10.28, while California's Mathias Gydesen, Nolan Koon, Thomas Shields and Josh Daniels earned third in 3:11.11.

Women's 400 medley relay results haven't been completely reported.
