U.S. Paralympic Open Features Several Records

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, December 12. Canada’s Brittany Gray and Katrina Roxon won the silver and bronze medals respectively on Saturday in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke to conclude the 16-country U.S. Paralympic Open swimming competition for swimmers with a disability. The efforts wrapped up a quick meet that saw numerous records set.

Sisse Egeborg of Denmark won the gold in the 200 breast, clocking 3:05.66. Gray was second in 3:24.15 and Roxon third in 3:35.94. Medals were awarded for the best overall results based on the swimmer’s time in relation to the world record in their respective disability categories. Canada used the competition as a gauge for the 2008 Paralympic Games and won nine medals.

The other medalists for Canada were Adam Purdy, Devin Gotell and Justin Kemp, who were 1-2-3 in the men’s 200 backstroke on Friday. Also on Friday, Joelle Rivard (S4) took the silver in the women’s 50 butterfly while Rhea Schmidt was third in the women’s 400 freestyle.
