U.S. Olympic Trials: Emily Silver’s Olympic Future In Doubt

OMAHA, Nebraska, July 6. DURING a press conference today with USA Swimming's Mark Schubert, Texas' Eddie Reese and Georgia's Jack Bauerle, an injury to Emily Silver's hand during 50 free qualifying races became public knowledge.

Silver finished fifth in the 100 free with a time of 54.91 to earn a spot on the 400 freestyle relay.

Schubert explained that Silver broke her hand during her finish in the prelims of the 50 free. The injury might require surgery and her spot on the Olympic roster will be dependent on a medical analysis of the injury. Schubert said that a decision will be forthcoming.

If Silver is removed from the team, Kara Lynn Joyce would move into her spot. Joyce placed seventh in the 100 free with a time of 55.02. Schubert even dead-panned in the presser that he had the utmost confidence that Joyce's coach would have her ready to go if called upon. Of course, Joyce's coach Bauerle was on the dais with him, which drew a chuckle from all in attendance.
