U.S. Junior Nationals: Distance Freestyle Open First Night

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, August 4. THE distance freestyle events were on tap during the first night of swimming at the U.S. Junior National Championships.

Amber McDermott, 15, of Salmon Bay pushed the pace throughout her swim to wind up winning the women's 800 free. She clocked a time of 8:40.59. Haley Anderson, 16, of the Sierra Marlins finished second in 8:41.57, while Kirsten Groome of First Colony, a top notch open water swimmer, took third in 8:41.68.

Jason Taylor, 17, of Brandon Sports destroyed his seed time of 8:20.46 en route to a winning effort of 8:07.77 to claim the men's 800 free. Tyler Sell, 16, of City of Pembroke placed second in 8:08.69, while Charlie Rimkus, 17, of Mission Viejo finished third in 8:12.15.
