U.S. Junior National Synchro Championships Underway in Austin

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 26. SEMIFINAL action got underway today at the 2010 U.S. Junior National Championships, being held at the University of Texas at Austin, Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Nearly 200 elite synchronized swimmers are competing for Junior National Titles in the solo, duet, team and combo events, with finals competition taking place Saturday.

The competition features athletes ages 15-18 and is hosted by the by the Austin Angelfish and the University of Texas at Austin, Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The event marks the first U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Championship held in Austin.

In today's duet semifinal action, Walnut Creek's Alyson Haylor and Alexa Tchekmarev finished the day in the top position. Santa Clara's Margo Sargent and Kathryn Spada followed while Riverside's Elizabeth Davidson and Lauren Nicholson placed third. The duet finals competition will take place at 10:40 am on Saturday.

In the solo semifinal competition, Walnut Creek reigned supreme with top finishes in the first and second place spots. Tchekmarev grabbed first while Haylor took second and Nicholson claimed the third place position. Solo finals will take place at 11:35 a.m. on Saturday.

In the team semifinal event, Santa Clara claimed the top spot followed by Walnut Creek and the Arizona Aqua Stars. The team competition will be contested on Saturday beginning at 1:10 p.m.

Top routines will advance to the 2010 U.S. National Championships which will take place April 15-17, in Huntersville, N.C. Following the conclusion of competition on Saturday, the 2010 U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Team Training Squad will perform. Admission to the performance will be included with the price of Saturday's admission.

Tickets for Saturday's finals competition will be $10 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 6-12) and senior citizens. Following the Awards Ceremony on Saturday, the Austin Angelfish will host a "Give Synchro a Try" clinic. Admission is free of charge.
