TYR Swim Meet of Champions: Jessica Hardy Nears American Record in Final Night

MISSION VIEJO, California, April 27. THE last session of competition at the TYR Swim Meet of Champions nearly boasted an American-record performance from Jessica Hardy in the women's 100 breast.

Ashley Evans, 16, opened the final night of swimming with a victory in the women's 1500 freestyle. She clocked a time of 16:54.37 to down another youngster, Amber McDermott, 15, who took second in 17:02.40.

Dana Vollmer followed with a meet and pool record in the women's 100 fly. She clocked a time of 58.65 to surpass the 1997 standard of 59.25 previously held by Misty Hyman. Tanya Krisman took second in 1:00.35, while Whitney Lopus placed third in 1:01.59.

Bryce Elser surfaced from a battle with Ankur Poseria in the men's 100 fly. Elser touched out Poseria, 55.05 to 55.28, with Adrian Law rounding out the top three in 55.68.

The women's 100 back was not nearly as close as Lauren Rogers won the event going away in 1:02.04. Cindy Tran, 16, gave it her all with a second-place 1:04.54 to beat Noriko Inada (1:04.66).

Peter Marshall set the second meet and pool record of the night with a swift time of 55.09 in the men's 100 back. That performance not only broke Aaron Peirsol's meet record of 55.27 from 2003, but also downed a 1992 facility standard of 55.22 set by Derek Weatherford. Jeff Ellingsen finished a distant second in 58.48, while Oliver Spees took third in 58.66.

Fans nearly witnessed an American record in the women's 100 breast after having the pleasure of watching Kate Ziegler set a world record last year. American-record holder Hardy came up just short of her national record time of 1:06.20 when she checked in with a meet and pool record time of 1:06.76. That readout crushed Rebecca Soni's standards of 1:08.80 set at this meet and facility a year ago. Lindsay Payne dipped under the previous standard as well with a second-place 1:08.45, while Jessie Schmitt took third in 1:11.12.

Another close battle occurred in the men's 100 breast as Matt Smith emerged triumphant in 1:04.09. John Dorr touched second in 1:04.21, while Cheyne Bloch placed third in 1:04.42.

Vollmer doubled up on the day with a convincing victory in the women's 200 IM when she hit the wall in 2:17.87. Lopus place second in the race with a 2:20.08, while Kirstie Chen finished third in 2:21.20.

Miguel Molina had a strong back half as he claimed the men's 200 IM in 2:05.26, over Nick D'Innocenzo, who led halfway through but took second in 2:06.52. Dorr placed third in 2:07.07.

The hometown Nadadores did some damage in the men's 800 free as Fran Crippen posted an 8:01.09 to win the event. Teammates Deni Cullom (8:18.41) and Nick Divan (8:24.18) rounded out the top three.
