Two MOR Swimmers Break NC State Records, Achieve Three Senior National Times

By Paul Silver

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 15. TWO Marlins Of Raleigh (MOR) swimmers churned up the waters at the Carolina Classic Swim Meet held at the University of South Carolina Dec. 10-12.

Kelsy and Kirsten Smith led MOR to a third place finish with 498 points at the meet that included teams from U. of South Carolina, Maine and Florida.

Kelsy Smith, a U. of Florida signee, made the World Championships Qualifying Time in the 200-yard back with a 2:00.33 and narrowly missed the 100 back with a 56.47.

Fourteen year-old Kirsten Smith broke the North Carolina 13-14 State Record in the 400 IM with a sterling 4:18.19, which was also a World Championship Trials qualifying time. The old record belonged to Meredith Green from 1997 at 4:20.39.

Kirsten was not done, however as she made another World Champs qualifying time in the 1650 with a 16:37.09 and narrowly missed the 1000 cut on the way out, as she put her feet on the wall at 10:01.40.

The 400 IM time for Kirsten makes her the 13th fastest performer for 13-14 year olds in US Swimming history according to USA Swimming.

Both Smiths recently competed successfully at the 2004 US Open, where Kelsy finished eighth in the 200 back and 11th in the 100 back. Kirsten finished 13th in the 200 IM at the Open.
