Tropical Storm Bonnie Blows an Early End to First Day of US Masters Long Course Nationals

By Jason M. Parker

SAVANNAH, Georgia, August 12. THE forces of nature eventually managed to shut down today's events at the USMS Long Course Nationals in Savannah, but not before swimmers made a few waves of their own.

Seventy-one year-old Lavelle Stoinoff of Multnomah AC (Oregon) broke her own U.S. record in the 800 meter free with a brilliant 12:35.12 — precisely 22 seconds than the mark she set last year, but she was still some three seconds short of the world record of 12:32.21. That mark belongs to Britain's Jane Asher.

Jackie Marr of San Diego Swim Masters apparently set a new world record for the 60-64 age group in the 1500 meter event with a time of 22:29.85, three seconds faster than Australia's Jen Thomasson swam last year.
"It's hard," she said when asked how it felt to break the record, "I hope to set another one tomorrow in the 400 IM, but now I have to eat."

After threatening the meet all day, the remnants of Tropical Storm Bonnie finally forced everyone out of the pool, resulting in the postponement of the meet.

The last three heats of the 1500 will be swum on Friday morning before final results are available.
