Towson Swimming Trips Up William & Mary and Georgetown

TOWSON, Maryland, October 12. Towson swimming had a strong start to its home schedule, beating both William and Mary and Georgetown in both the men’s and women’s swimming events.

Competing in its first home meet of the season, the Towson University men’s swimming and diving team earned a pair of victories over William & Mary (final score of 150-134) and Georgetown University (221-75) Saturday at Burdick Pool.

The Tigers saw strong performances from Matt McKenney, Matt Lowe, John Gartland, Sawyer Martin and Brandon Ress. All five won events for Towson.

McKenney led the Tiger effort, winning the 100-yard butterfly (49.77), 200-yard butterfly (1:51.81) and swimming anchor on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:05.98).

“Matt was unbelievable today,” Head Coach Pat Mead said. “Winning the 100-fly and 200-fly, anchoring the 400-free relay. Having the pressure to anchor that relay and to finish the way he did, he did great.”

Lowe won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:36.96. He was also impressive in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing second (1:52.44) and in the 1000-yard freestyle (third-place, 9:45.40).

Gartland earned a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 57.31.

Martin secured the 200-yard freestyle win for the Tigers by timing 1:41.32.

Ress impressed in the 1000-yard freestyle, earning a victory with a time of 9:39.83. He also finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:41.46).

“It was an all-around team effort by our guys today,” Mead said.

On the diving side, the Tigers saw action in the one-meter event from freshman Nick Essing who earned a score of 119.78 and freshman Matt Sieffert who finished with a score of 111.68.

“Nick Essing was huge by diving today,” Mead said. “If he had not dove, we wouldn’t have won today. So him stepping up and looking to contribute in diving was unbelievable.

“Matt Sieffert, also diving, was tremendous. He had some good swims today as well,” Mead said.

The men’s win over Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) rival William & Mary, came down to the final relay of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The relay team of Nick Breschi, Zach Brech, Matt Hans and McKenney earned a first-place finish with a time of 3:05.98 to secure the Tiger victory.

Towson next faces William & Mary and Georgetown in Washington, D.C,. next Saturday. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.

Competing in its first home meet of the season, the Towson University women’s swimming and diving team earned a pair of victories over William & Mary (final score of 167-127) and Georgetown University (231-69) Saturday at Burdick Pool.

“The girls had a ton on the line today,” Head Coach Pat Mead said. “Being able to say that they haven’t lost a CAA meet in years.”

Charlotte Holz led the Tiger effort, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.46), 200-yard backstroke (2:04.35) and 200-yard individual medley (2:06.40).

“Holz was hands down, our standout swimmer of the meet,” Head Coach Pat Mead said. “She’s somebody who has come so far. She knows what to do and when to make her move in the races.”

The Tigers saw impressive performances by Victoria Oslund, Jenna Van Camp and Macey Arnold as well.

Oslund won the 100-yard butterfly, timing 56.77. She also placed first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.80). She timed 2:08.09 in the 200-yard individual medley to finish second.

Van Camp had top scores in the 100-yard breaststroke (first-place, 1:04.31) and 200-yard breaststroke (first-place, 2:19.03).

Arnold earned victories in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.98) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:21.71).

On the diving side, Molly Arceri won the one-meter diving with a score of 304.03 while Lyndsey Dickson earned the three-meter diving victory (293.40).

Natalee Szopo placed third in the one-meter and three-meter events (scores of 289.95 and 275.70, respectively). Hannah Ostrem rounded out the Tiger’ success in diving, finishing fourth in both the one-meter and three-meter events (scores of 275.18 and 237.68, respectively).

Arceri, Szopo and Ostrem all earned scores that qualify them for the NCAA Zone Championship. Dickson qualified for the NCAA Zone Championship last week at the Potomac Relays.

“Molly is doing all new dives so winning the one-meter, that’s a great sign,” Mead said. “It’s one thing to come in and win but when you’re doing all new dives and putting up those scores, that’s phenomenal.”

Towson will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Old Dominion. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.

William and Mary Press Release

The William and Mary men’s swimming team began the season on Saturday, splitting a pair of meets on the road and coming away with two dual-meet records and a pair of lifetime-best performances. The Tribe defeated Georgetown 219-69, but fell to Towson 150-134.

Leading the way for the Tribe was junior Jeremiah O’Donnell (Chapel Hill, N.C.), who won five of his six races and broke W&M’s in-season record in the 200 breast. He timed 2:03.73 for the victory and the record in that event, and also swept the 200 IM in 1:54.09. O’Donnell also swam the 200 free, beating Georgetown and finishing second against Towson with a lifetime-best 1:41.60.

Also setting a dual-meet record was the Tribe’s 200 medley relay, which won in 1:31.64, the eighth-best time in school history. That squad included junior Will Manion (Haddonfield, N.J.), senior Matt Goetz (Islip, N.Y.), and juniors Justin Barden (Gordonsville, Va.) and Billy Russell (Newport News, Va.). Manion swept the backstrokes in 49.47 and 1:50.03, re-qualifying for December’s Short Course Nationals in the 100 back, and Russell swept the 50 free and the 100 free in 20.85 and 46.06. Barden won the 100 fly against Georgetown in 49.83, and finished second to Towson in that event and to Manion in the two backstrokes.

Other notables included junior Andrew Nyce (Vienna, Va.), who swam a lifetime-best in the 100 breast with his time of 57.82. That performance defeated all opponents from Georgetown, and also improved Nyce to 15th in school history in the event. Among the freshman class, Conrad Zamparello (Midlothian, Va.) won the 500 free and the 1000 free against Georgetown in 4:44.34 and 9:50.23, respectively.

Newcomers Evan Baker (Chantilly, Va.) and Tommy Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) both leapt onto W&M’s all-time top lists in both of the butterfly events. Baker ranks 13th all-time in both events, timing 1:53.36 in the 200 fly and 50.78 in the 100 fly, and won the 200 fly against Georgetown. Kealy is right behind him, 14th in school history in the 200 fly and 15th in the 100 fly, after timing 1:53.41 and 50.86.

William and Mary has the next week off, before hosting Mary Washington at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.

The William and Mary women’s swimming team began the season on Saturday, splitting a pair of meets on the road and coming away with a dual-meet record and a lifetime-best performance. The Tribe defeated Georgetown 208-80, but fell to Towson 167-127.

The Tribe had four women all win a pair of events on the day, and took a total of 14 of the 28 events in all. Sophomore Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England) led the way with three wins in four events, taking second in the 200 back against Towson but sweeping the 100 back and winning the 200 against Georgetown. Rittenhouse, the school-record holder in the 100 back, went 57.99 seconds in that event and 2:04.81 in the 200 back. She also led the 200 medley relay to a dual-meet record time of 1:45.10, which was also the 12th-best performance in school history. Along with Rittenhouse, the team included freshman Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.), sophomore Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, Conn.), and senior Megan Howard (McLean, Va.).

Howard also won a pair events, sweeping the 100 free in 52.32 seconds, and sophomore Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) was the winner in the 50 free in 23.71 seconds. Classmate Selina Fuller (Henrico, Va.) won the 1000 free (10:32.83) and the 500 free (5:07.90) both against Georgetown, as did Ustjanauskas in the 100 fly in 57.53 and Allie Christy (Williamsburg, Va.) in the 200 breast with a time of 2:25.95. Freshman Rachel Anderson (Clifton, Va.) defeated the Hoyas in the 200 IM in 2:11.92, and the 400 free relay of Howard, Miller, sophomore Georgie Crompton (Brooklandville, Md.), and freshman Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.) won in both meets with a time of 3:30.68.

Also of note were a pair of all-time top performances. In the 200 fly, Mack swam a lifetime-best 2:07.05 to beat Georgetown, and improved to 13th all-time at W&M in the event. Her classmate Valls defeated the Hoyas in the 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock in 1:05.69 to rank 15th in school history.

William and Mary has the next week off, before hosting Mary Washington at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.

The Georgetown University swimming & diving team competed in its second dual meet of the season with Towson and William & Mary at Burdick Pool on the campus of Towson University on Saturday afternoon.

The Hoyas women fell to Towson 231-69, while the men fell 221-75 to the host Tigers in a challenging meet that also included the Tribe of William & Mary.

In the diving competition, sophomore Jared Cooper-Vespa (Orange, Conn./The Hopkins School) continued his strong season breaking the 300-point mark in the one-meter diving competition with a 300.90 to claim first place. Freshman teammate Benjamin Goodfriend (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) finished second with 266.48 points. Later in the meet, Cooper-Vespa came back in the three-meter dive and broke his own program-record with a 301.73. Goodfriend finished second with 249.23.

Georgetown continued to get strong results out of its freshmen women. Freshman Bailey Page (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) got the Hoyas on the board in the fifth event, finishing second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.01. Page later earned a fifth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 52.99.

In the 200 yard butterfly freshman Shana McLaughlin (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) earned a fourth place finish in 2:08.19, while senior Jillian Carter (Norwalk, Conn./Convent of the Sacred Heart) finished seventh in 2:14.22. Freshman Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) finished fourth overall in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:27.84.

In the 50 yard freestyle sophomore Erica Fabbri (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) finished fifth in 24.64, less than a second out of the top spot. She also earned a fourth place finish in the 100 yard butterfly in 58.26, while McLaughlin, Molly Gaynor and Carter also cracked the top eight.

The relay team of Fabbri, Kirsten Peterson, McLaughlin and Page finished third in the 400 yard freestyle with a time of 3:37.20.

On the men’s side sophomore William Leach (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) placed fifth in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.95.

Freshman Samuel Delise (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) earned a fifth place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.64 for the men.

The Hoyas return to action next Friday, October 17 when they travel to Princeton to take on the Tigers. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
