“Total Immersion” Head Takes Coaching Job

NEW PALTZ, NY, August 7. TERRY Laughlin, the founder and head coach of Total Immersion Swimming, will return to active USA Swimmng club coaching as the head coach of the Hawks Swimming Association in New Paltz, New York, beginning September 1.

Laughlin, who coached at the club and collegiate levels from 1972 through 1988, has been absent from the club coaching ranks since founding Total Immersion in 1989.

"After 15 years away from coaching a USS program, I'm intensely excited at the prospect of doing it again," Laughlin commented.

"Cecil Colwin's memorial tribute to Doc Counsilman on SwimInfo.com, in January, moved me in unexpected ways. Reading about what made Doc special reminded me that coaching swimmers day-in and day-out is what I always thought was the highest and best use of my time and talent. The day I read it I resolved to return to club coaching as soon as possible.

In addition to founding Total Immersion, Laughlin wrote the book Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster and Easier in 1996; the book has been among the most popular swimming books ever written.

"While the Hawks are a small team (60 swimmers) with modest resources and mainly developmental-level swimmers, I think it's a perfect situation to develop a model and laboratory for how to employ Total Immersion methods for success in competitive swimming."

Laughlin pledges to place Hawks swimmers in the finals of the US Olympic Trials in 2008.
