Tom Shields Flys Into Top Ten World Rankings in 100 Fly

Cal’s Tom Shields bested the competition in the men’s 100-meter fly with a final time of 51.73 moving him from nineteenth up to ninth in the world rankings for 2015. Tucson Ford Aquatic’s Masa Kishida claimed second with a 53.14, while Cal’s Justin Lynch took a close third with a 53.16.

Cal’s Farida Osman bested the competition in the women’s 100-meter fly with a final time of 58.76 during finals of day four at the Los Angeles Invite. Teammate Kelly Naze finished second with time of 59.93, dropping .40 seconds from her prelims time of 1:00.33. Aquazot’s Eva Merrell finished third with a 1:00.04.

Alexandra Wooden, swimming unattached, took gold in the women’s 1500-meter free with a final time of 17:04.21. Centro Actuatico De Alto’s teammates Bianca Daniela Luna Rocha (17:12.63) and Martha Ruth Aguilar Ortega (17:12.70) finished second and third respectively.

Tucson Ford Aquatic’s Ty Fowler claimed the men’s 800-meter free with a time of 8:12.95. Parks Jones, swimming unattached, was second with a final time of 8:14.60, while Tucson Ford Aquatic’s Christopher Wieser finished third with a 8:17.35.

Team Bruin’s Madison White took first in the women’s 100-meter back with a finishing time of 1:01.80. Stanford’s Ally Howe grabbed second with a 1:02.30, while SoCal’s Ella Eastin was a close third with a 1:02.40.

Cal’s Ryan Murphy posted a 53.64 in the men’s 100-meter back to take first. Tucson Ford Aquatic’s Matt Grevers finished second overall with a 54.07, while Trojan Swim Club’s Luca Spinazzola rounded out the top three with a 55.58.

Sarah Haase of Stanford came out on top in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:08.59. Emma Schoettmer of Tucson Ford Aquatics posted a 1:09.08 for second, and Guacho Aquatic’s Charis Hoppe finished third with a 1:11.62.

Brendan McHugh of Greater Philadelphia Aquatics was victorious in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke finishing with a time of 1:01.40. Coca-Cola’s Kosuke Kitajima grabbed second with a 1:01.35, while Trojan Swim Club’s Steven Stumph claimed third with a 1:02.58.

Cal’s Camille Cheng grabbed first in the women’s 200-meter free with a final time of 2:00.88, dropping 1.48 seconds from her prelims time of 2:02.36. Tucson Ford Aquatic’s Margo Geer took second with a 2:02.12, while Cal’s Rachael Acker rounded out the top three with a 2:04.41.

Kitajima moved up to take first in the men’s 200-meter IM posting a final time of 2:02.42. Grand Canyon Aquatic’s Iegor Lytvenok claimed second-place with a 2:03.73, while Aquazot’s Corey Okubo was third with a 2:04.71.

McHugh was actually 1:01.04, to finish ahead of Kitajima’s 1:01.35, rather than the 1:01.40 listed in the article which would have left Kosuke as the winnner.
Chuck Katis had the third fastest prelim at 1:02.55, but swam in this Bonus Final. Why was he in the Bonus?
His 1:01.45 from that Bonus heat would have been a fun mix in with McHugh and Kitajima in the Championship Final.
