Tom Johnson Talks About Seed Times for the Olympics

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 3. AT the Canadian Olympic Trials held in early April, none of the swimmers wore the new Speedo LZR Racer. A directive from Swimming Canada banned the new suit from the competition because it was not readily available to the entire community.

In an exclusive interview with Swimming World Radio, which appears on page 17 of the May issue of Swimming World Magazine, Tom Johnson, head coach of the Canadian Olympic team, talks about the effect that decision could have for the athletes who made the Olympic team. Johnson said the athletes' slower seedtimes for the Olympics against those in other countries who made their teams wearing the new suit is not an issue.

"Regardless of what lane we're in, what heat we're in, where we're ranked going into the meet, we need to move up in the rankings," he said. "Once we do have that benefit (of wearing the suit), you'll see some lift out of our performance levels."
