Tim Phillips and Ryan Lochte Keep It Close in 100 Fly at Athens Sectionals

Swim MAC teammates Tim Phillips and Ryan Lochte squared off in the men’s 100-meter fly in prelims of day three of the Long Course Speedo Sectionals in Athens, GA. Despite a quick last 50-meters from Lochte, Phillips was able to hold him off and claim the first-place seed for tonight’s finals with a 53.04. Lochte turned in a 53.07 for second, while Dylan Bosch rounds out the top three with a 53.57.

Leah Stevens cruised to a first-place seed in the women’s 400-meter free with a 4:16.14. Kathleen Baker took second with a 4:18.16, while Stephanie Peters finished third with a 4:20.03.

Club Wolverine’s Connor Jaeger claimed first in prelims of the men’s 400-meter free with a time of 3:52.01. Kevin Litherland of Dynamo Swim Club was second with a 3:53.11, while teammate Matias Koski placed third with a 3:55.78.

Hellen Moffitt bested the competition in prelims of the women’s 100-meter fly with a time of 59.35. Swim MAC’s Cammile Adams was a close second with a time of 59.85, and Maddie Rusch rounded out the top three wit ha 1:00.09.

Micah Lawrence claimed the first-place seed in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke with a finishing time of 1:08.37. Melanie Margalis finished second with a 1:08.83, while Kayla Brumbaum was third with a 1:10.59.

Nicolas Fink and Zach Hayden kept a tight race in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke finishing only .11 seconds apart. Fink turned in a 1:02.47 to grab the first-place seed, while Hayden settled for second and a 1:02.58. Michael Duderstadt was third with a 1:02.99.

Believe it or not, I think that is Adams’ first time under 1:00 in the 100 fly. Hopefully she will continue to improve rapidly on this; she needs to be more in the 57-58 range to challenge for international podiums in the 2Fly, because here competitors are taking it out the 200 in 59.
