Three More U.S. Divers Qualify for FINA World Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, May 14. THREE more divers have been added to USA Diving's roster for this summer's FINA World Championships after their performances at the world trials Saturday. The World Championships will take place July 16-24 in Shanghai, China.

2008 Olympian Mary Beth Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind.) and 15-year-old Anna James (Midland, Texas) won the women's synchronized 10-meter event and Abby Johnston (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Durham, N.C.) won the women's 1-meter contest to earn spots on the team.

Three other divers who had previously been named to the team also earned berths on a second event. Three-time Olympian Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Austin, Texas) and Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.), who had already earned individual 3-meter spots, won the men's synchronized 3-meter trials to qualify for worlds on that event as well. 2008 Olympian Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill./Minneapolis, Minn.) also qualified on 1-meter after already securing a berth on 3-meter.

James and Dunnichay won the World Championships trials with 888.12 points over three lists of dives to earn their spot on the team. A week ago, they won the silver medal at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix, their first competition together.

Johnston averaged 9s on her final dive, an inward 1 ½ pike, to wrap up her 1-meter victory with a two-list total of 590.75 points. Bryant finished second with 578.75 points.

Dumais and Ipsen, who won a silver medal at the 2009 World Championships, scored 1297.89 points over three lists to win the 3-meter synchro trials.

The world trials continue through Sunday, with spots for women's 3-meter synchro, men's 10-meter synchro and men's 1-meter on the line.
