Three British Records Fall at World Champs Trials

MANCHESTER, England. April 14. THREE British national records and a Commonwealth mark were broken on the fifth day of the British National Championships in Manchester. The meet also is serving as the selection meet for this summer's World Championships in Japan.

James Gibson set th Commonwealth/national mark when he finished first in the semifinals of the men's 50m breaststroke. His 27.82 was 28-hundredths of a second faster than Darren Mew. But Mew, who won the 100m breast earlier in the meet, just missing the decade-old national/Commonwealth mark, is expected to challenge for the top spot. For his part, Gibson said he is taking aim at the European Record of 27.61 set by Ukraine's Alex Dzaburiya. That time stood as the world record until last month, when it was broken first by Anthony Robinson and then by Ed Moses at the U.S. Nationals in Austin.

Georgina Lee set a British mark and earned herself a trip to Japan when she won the women's 200m fly. The SMU student clocked 2:10.21 to beat Margaretha Peddar by more than two seconds.

A third British record fell in the semifinals of the women's 50m backstroke, when Sarah Price clocked 29.35 seconds.

Aside from the women's 200m fly, only two other finals were contested tonight. Nineteen year-old Joanna Fargus won the 200m backstroke in World Championship qualifying time of 2:11.81. In a tight, three-woman battle, she opened up almost a one-second advantage over Katy Sexton and Sarah Price, and then held on. Sexton out-touched Price for the second spot, 2:12.44 to 2:12.45.

Ian Edmond won the men's 200m breaststroke in 2:15.50, beating favored Adam Whitehead (2:15.99), but the time was not fast enough to earn Edmond a ticket to Japan.

MEN'S SEMIFINALS
In men's semifinal action, Matthew Kidd, who just missed making the 2000 Olympic team, posted the fastest 50m free at 23.05. Mark Foster, the short course world record-holder was second at 23.23, after barely making it into the semis.

James Hickman, former short course world record-holder, and Stephen Parry posted the top two times in the 200m fly semis. Hickman went 1:59.45 while Parry touched in 1:59.82. Robert Greenwood was a strong 2:00.57 in third.

The 200 back final also looks to be a close affair, as Adam Ruckwood (2:03.00) led Gregor Tait (2:03.12) through the semis.

WOMEN'S SEMIFINALS
The women's semifinals featured a very tight battle in the 100m free. Karen Pickering, 30, clocked the fastest time, 56.13, just ahead of Melanie Marshall's 56.21. Less than a stroke behind, three women are tied at 56.35: 50-meter freestyle Commonwealth record-holder Alison Sheppard, Janine Belton and Rosalind Brett.

Nicola Jackson (27.64) and Brett (27.66) are the top two semifinalists in the 50 fly.

Jaime King was the only sub-1:10 swimmer in the 100m breaststroke semis, clocking 1:09.94. Zoe Baker, who won the 50, was second in 1:11.16. Fourteen year-old Kate Haywood, who set a British junior record in the 50, had the fastest split at the halfway mark today (33.08), but managed only to qualify seventh.
