TULSA, OK – Karl Malone and Jenny Thompson were named as winners of the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award. The award recognizes athletes who use their sports fame to do good deeds for others. “We created the awards to help teach young men and women there are athletes serving as positive role models with whom they can identify,” said Gene Martin, chairman of the Iba Awards Banquet. Thompson, 25, who has won five Olympic gold medals, is a spokeswoman for the 1998 Junior Goodwill Games and has promoted a “Safe Kids” campaign for water safety. She also is a member of the Kids Peace National Sports Council and has supported benefits for pediatric AIDS research.
