Thomas Lurz, Britta Kamrau-Corestein Win 5K Events at German Open Water Championships

GROSSKROTZENBURG, Germany, July 22. DEFENDING Swimming World Magazine Open Water Swimmer of the Year Thomas Lurz and 25K world champion Britta Kamrau-Corestein captured 5K crowns at the German Open Water Championships held in Grosskrotzenburg, Germany.

Lurz added the 5K title to his 10K win from two days ago with a time of 55:15.52, while Christian Hein, an Athens Olympian in the 400 free, who placed second in the 10K also wound up second in the 5K in 55:17.11. Jan Wolfgarten rounded out the medal-winners with a time of 55:19.68.

Meanwhile, Kamrau-Corestein beat arch-rival Angela Maurer for the women's 5K title, 1:01:31.65 to 1:01:33.27. The times look to be correct compared to those reports for the women in the 10K on Friday.

Additionally, competition within Masters and junior age group divisions took place at the 5K distance.

The 25K titles will be on the line Monday.
