Therese Alshammar and Thiago Pereira Continue to Lead FINA World Cup Series

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, October 21. THIAGO Pereira (BRA) and Therese Alshammar (SWE) reinforced their lead of the overall ranking of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2010, after a successful fourth leg of the competition in Tokyo (JPN) on October 20-21.

Pereira, who won the men's 100m and 400m individual medley was the fourth best performer of the meet, and is at the top of the men's classification with 88 points. Alshammar, who triumphed in the women's 50m and 100m butterfly, established the most valuable performance of the competition in the 100m, and leads the ranking of this World Cup with 80 points.

Among men, Japan collected eight gold medals at home, with the best male result going to Takeshi Matsuda in the 200m butterfly (1:50.64 – 959 FINA Points). Besides Pereira's two wins, the remaining titles went to Australia (two by Kyle Richardson in the 50m and 100m free), South Africa (Roland Schoeman was the best in the 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly), USA (Peter Marshall, 100m backstroke), Germany (Steffen Deibler, 100m butterfly), and Austria (Markus Rogan, 200m individual medley).

In the women's field, the Japanese domination was clear, with also eight victories. The most valuable performance for the home stars went to Aya Terakawa in the 200m backstroke (2:03.62, 918 FINA Points and third best female result of this leg). The team of United States was also quite successful, with four gold medals (two for Julia Smit, and one for Jessica Hardy and Elaine Breeden). Besides Alshammar, her teammate Jennie Johansson gave another victory for Sweden in the 50m breaststroke, while Hinkelien Schreuder (NED, 50m free) and Marieke Guehrer (AUS, 100m free) were the remaining winners of this Japanese leg.

The last three meets of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2010 will now take place in Europe.
