Then and Now

PHOENIX, Arizona, July 8. IN the July issue of Swimming World Magazine, Publisher Brent Rutemiller compares what life looked like in the sport a year out from the 2008 Beijing Olympics compared to being a year out from the 2012 London Olympics in this month's edition of A Voice for the Sport. The column is reprinted below:

What a difference four years can make!
2007: Fran Crippen was an early favorite to make the Olympic team in open water events. 2011: Olympic hopefuls now participate in Fran Crippen Memorial Open Water races around the globe after Crippen died in a FINA Open Water event in 2010.
2007: There was talk of Michael Phelps possibly winning eight gold medals in Beijing. 2011: There is now talk that Ryan Lochte could possibly win eight gold medals in London.
2007: Chuck Wielgus, executive director for USA Swimming, was being treated for colon cancer. 2011: Wielgus is now in full recovery and has his sights set on leading USA Swimming to London.
2007: Amanda Beard was posing nude for Playboy magazine. 2011: Beard now poses on blocks while training for her fifth Olympics.
2007: Dave Durden was named head coach for UC-Berkeley. 2011: Durden is now holding the NCAA Division I men's team trophy for UC-Berkeley.
2007: Frank Busch's University of Arizona teams are a year away from winning NCAA team titles. 2011: Busch has now resigned from U of A to become national team director for USA Swimming.
2007: Brendan Hansen struggled to regain his form after being named 2006 USA Male Swimmer of Year. 2011: Hansen comes out of retirement to train for 2012 USA Olympic Team.
2007: Kate Ziegler broke Janet Evans' 1988 world record in the 1500 by 10 seconds (15:42.54). 2011: Evans is now launching a comeback to make the 2012 USA Olympic Trial cuts.
2007: Mark Schubert was national head coach for USA Swimming. 2011: Schubert now trains 39-year-old Janet Evans, and together notch Masters world records.
2007: Ian Crocker still owned the world record in the 100 fly with a time of 50.40. 2011: Crocker is now in training again after retiring three years ago.
2007: Katie Hoff, coached by Paul Yetter, sets a world record in the 400 IM (4:32.89). 2011: Hoff is now training in California, and Yetter is coaching in Florida.
2007: Dara Torres, at age 40, starts her comeback by winning a 50 free at USA Nationals. 2011: Torres is now training for a spot on her sixth Olympic team.
2007: Cesar Cielo was breaking NCAA records to start his march toward Olympic gold. 2011: Cielo now owns one Olympic gold medal and world records in the 50 and 100 meter freestyles.
2007: Aaron Peirsol was setting world records. 2011: Peirsol is now retired from swimming.
2007: Natalie Coughlin set a world record in the 100 back, ending a long dry streak. 2011: Coughlin still remains at the top of her game.
2007: Teri McKeever is the top female coach in USA Swimming. 2011: McKeever is now the head coach for USA Women's Olympic swim team.
2007: China training program, talent identification and performance predictions are a mystery. 2011: China training program, talent identification and performance predictions are still a mystery.
2007: Jessica Hardy set American records in the sprint breaststrokes. 2011: Hardy is now on track for London after being removed from 2008 USA Olympic team for testing positive for ingesting a banned substance only to be found innocent on a later date.
2007: Ous Mellouli is suspended 18 months for use of a banned substance. 2011: Mellouli is now the leading contender to repeat as 1500 meter freestyle champion in London.
2007: Ian Thorpe was enjoying retirement at age 24. 2011: Thorpe is now back in training at age 28.
2007: Ed Moses focused on pro golf after retiring from swimming after the 2004 Olympic Trials. 2011: Moses is now making a comeback to make the 2012 Olympic Team.
